According to my Dad (always a dodgy source of info) My mu is having her aorta replaced - can anyone throw any light on this surgery?

She is having her aorta replaced (or lined with teflon) from in her chest through her stomach to where it splits in to each leg, then all the way down one leg

Does this make any sense or has he finally flipped

She will be in hospital about 10 days - 2 weeks then incapacitated for about 6 weeks....apparently

& I am feeling a little stressed about it

Fingers crossed for you Katy.

My Dad has a bisected aortic aneryism (sp) in his chest) which had a stent put in it last year after literally years of hedging and delays from lots of hospitals - he was in the Royal Free (we live the other side of London). He was in hospital for 5 weeks and then about another 3-4 weeks at home was spent in bed. I don't know how old your Mum is but Dad was 76 when he had his op done. .

I wish you and your Mum all the best.

KatyMac · 10/03/2009 10:48

She is a very fit (ish) 63....I hope

Thinking of you and your Mum, Katy. x

My Dad had this op done about ten years ago (when he was 70 )and recovered very well afterwards.

DarrellRivers · 10/03/2009 11:07

Am here as well x

solidgoldbrass · 10/03/2009 11:11

My Grandad had this done about 40 years ago (he had an aortic aneyrism). He lived another 15 years at least and died of something unrelated in his late 70s. AFAIK it's drastic surgery but effective.

Northernlurker · 10/03/2009 11:24

Have said a prayer for your mum

KatyMac · 10/03/2009 11:34

Thank you all for your good wishes

Northernlurker - Thank you, I appreciate that

Hoping for good news.
My DD was very I'll in hospital a few weeks ago and had too much fluid around her brain. Causing her optic nerves to swell.
She's still not 100% but has gone back to work today. She's 24 and married but we mums still worry.

Thinking of you That sort of surgery does take hours try not to worry and keep us posted

DarrellRivers · 10/03/2009 15:41

I second NH, surgery of this sort takes a long time

Sawyer64 · 10/03/2009 16:20

I used to scrub for these when I was a Theatre Nurse 15 years ago,and the patient was "on the table" for 8 hours plus sometimes. We'd have a changeover of shift (if the end of the op wasn't imminent) and swap with the new shift nurse.

It can take up to an hour to get the patient anaesthetised and ready to start,so it may be as late as 8pm tonight before you hear.

Absolute hell isn't it? Thinking of you.

KatyMac · 10/03/2009 17:21

Thanks I rang the High Dependency Unit & she isn't back yet

They have said they will ring me when she gets back - But I am assuming as it is a busy ward, they may not manage it straight away

OP posts:
Northernlurker · 10/03/2009 17:46

I'm sure they will ring when they get the chance but of course getting her settled and so forth will be the priority. No reason why you can't ring again though - in a couple of hours if you haven't heard? It's perfectly reasonable to be anxious and to want the latest news. Even if she isn't back on the ward by then, they may have heard that she's in recovery or the ops coming to an end or whatever.

Thinking of you all.

KatyMac · 10/03/2009 17:59

My dad has asked me to go & get him & take him to the hospital - fortunately a friend has offered to look after DD as DH is teaching tonight

So I won't be around until later

Thanks everyone

She has had her aorta lined from about 4 inches below her heart down into her left leg, plus 3 ?stents? it took about 7 hours ? My dad & I think she looks absolutely fabulous ? she is a much better colour & her feet are marvellous
