She has had body odour lately, surely that is not right. I only put sanex bubble bath in her bath and don't wash her with soap as it is too drying. Surely she doesn't need deoderant at the age of six!

Well 6 is very young but my 9 year old suffers which I was surprised about - she also has very greasy hair & the start of spots! Have bought her a deodrant & facial wipes!

She does have a few spots on her nose but have put this down to her having over active sebatious (sp?) glands, I found this out when she had a series of styes when she was 4. I have had her hair cut into a bob recently as it was getting smelly quite quickly.

Oh yes I think my dd needs a bob but is desparate to grow it long - it needs washing daily - yuk

My DD2 has had BO since she was 4.2. She also has spotty skin and her hair has become greasier. I now have to use proper soap or shower gel to wash her armpits as bubble bath alone doesn't get rid of the odour.

She had her hormone levels checked (needed to make sure she wasn't entering puberty) but they were fine, and she doesn't have any other pubertal signs like pubic or underarm hair, or breast tissue growth.

Her paed just said it was normal adrenarche (the maturation of the adrenal glands that happens normally between 6 and 10, prior to puberty starting) and to come back if she developed any other signs. She also said it was fine to use deodorant!

Thanks Sidge, I googled adrenarche and initially got my knickers in a bit of a twist. My periods started when I was 10 and it really affected my confidence and friendships at school. I was really hoping she would take after my dh's family who were all late developers. I want her to be a child for as long as possible but that's probably pretty selfish on my part.
Anyway, I have calmed down about it now, she shows no other signs of early adrenarche such as underarm or pubic hair. I have bought her some deoderant which she is delighted with and am going to teach her how to shower properly.

Lilliput, my dd is 5 and I first noticed a whiff of body odour last summer when she was 4.5....its not all the time, but increasingly often when she gets hot and sweaty, or upset!

I panicked, googled, posted on MN, calmed down...and bought her a natural deodarant (Nature's Path, I think its called) which she loves and uses occasionally if having a whiffy day. She has had teeny spots once or twice, but no other signs of puberty and GP was unconcerned.

Good to know we're not alone, though

My 10 year old started getting smelly when she was about 8, her hair is very greasy too. Just explained to her about changes as got older yada yada and the need to be careful when washing and to make sure all bits very clean and to change t shirts every day and she wears deodorant. She wants her hair long and she is allowed to grow it on the condition that she looks after it and doesn't moan about washing it frequently.
