Sleeping tablets

Not sure where to post this.

Are there any sleeping tablets that work, can be taken with Ads and will help me have a decent nights sleep that is more than the few hours I am getting now. It isn't enough and the tiredness is really getting me down.

Have you tried passiflora? A friend of mine was able to sleep well with that. If you are on ADs, maybe you can ask your GP a prescription for zopiclone or zolpidem.

nickytwotimes · 08/03/2009 20:45

Be careful even with herbal ones while you are on ADs!
Agree, go back to your gp or ask the pharmacist.

Sorry you are not sleeping - it is rotten.

Nabster · 09/03/2009 10:07

I need something that will knock me out for a good few hours and I will wake up feeling like I can face the day.

Be very careful with zopiclone-they are highly addictive.I would say no more than a week on them tops.

I used to take them with a ad (and wound up with an addiction for 3 years).

Nabster · 09/03/2009 14:32

IIRC I asked my GP about sleeping tablets before and he said I couldn't have any.

Well, they don't like prescribing as you tend to begin to rely (especially if depressed/anxious ) on them -like I did, but they generally will prescribe for a short course if you are at your wits end with lack of sleep.

noddyholder · 09/03/2009 14:39

Could you try something else?i bought some Dr stuart valerian plus tea and it knocked dp and I out so I stopped it.Apparently they swapped it for sedatives in a womens prison with 100% success. You are supposed to pour water on the bag and then leave 5 mins and take it out.We left it in and were like zombies.Sainsburys sell it

poshwellies · 09/03/2009 14:47

Agree with Noddy-try alternative options.

Nytol can often work too.

Stopping tea/coffee/alcohol before bed all helps too.

Lulumama · 09/03/2009 14:53

i have taken zopiclone for 7 days max. when on ADs, i did find it helpful, but also in conjunction with going to bed at a reasonable hour, ie. no later than 9pm, so i was not groggy in the morning with the children

Nabster · 09/03/2009 17:54

Even if I go to bed early I find it really hard to drop off and would just love to be able to go to sleep within seconds like my DH appears too.

Asked GP for something to help me sleep today and he said no. Trying warm milk as that used to help.

if your GP is giving you a blank refusal, can oyu see a different GP? or is he giving you reasons for not prescribing these tablets? is he worried about an OD risk?

WowOoo · 10/03/2009 16:30

If at all possible try to avoid them. They are so addictive.
What's keeping you from sleeping? Have you tried relaxation exercises, exercise, reading something boring, one or two nytol? I use Kalms (herbal stuff) as I really don't ever want to take sleeping tabs again. It says to take 1/2, but I always take 3/4 and they knock me out. Check that they OK with your Ad's.
Hope it gets better soon. It's a bitch.

Nabster · 10/03/2009 18:22

He says they are addictive.

I have a new appointment with the mental health assessment team on Friday and maybe they can help. The GP said they might want to change my meds or put me in for intense counselling.

Could it be my meds keeping me from sleeping? When I first started on them I was having horrendous dreams which left me feeling drained. I wake up feeling shattered and dreading the day ahead, but the dreams have settled down a bit.

If you are on Fluoxetine it may cause sleep problems. If you take other SSRIs (like sertraline, paroxetine, citalopram, etc) in the evening or at night they may keep you from sleeping too. Usually the need to be taken in the morning except Mirtazepine which is quite sedating and sometimes is used as a sleeping medication itself.

Nabster · 11/03/2009 10:22

I am on citalopram and the GP told me to take them in the morning. I had warm milk last night and did seem to go to sleep quicker and slept right through until about 6.10am.
