I've discovered a band of red, dry, flaking, sore skin under my wedding ring...

...dh thinks its an allergy (?!?surely not, to platinum, after all these years), I think its eczema (though I never get it anywhere else) caused by the cold, my ring getting tighter and trapping dirt/water under it maybe?

But dd's hydrocortisone cream isn't shifting it, neither is Canested (thought it worth a try). It does get better with those two overnight, then comes back during the day.

ANy ideas, tips or remedies? Or could it be a mysterious message about the evils of marriage?

I get this sometimes when it gets damp under the ring (because I have not dried it properly). I have to take my wdding ring off for a couple of days then it's ok again.

I had something similar where I'd got stuff trapped in my ring through washing up. I gave it a really good clean and also got a steroid cream (can't remember which one, but it was a bit stronger than hydrocortisone) and the two things together cleared it up. Maybe worth seeing the doctor and also making sure your skin is completely dry under the ring once you've washed your hands?

This happens to me sometimes- it's due to washing my hands so much. With 2 toddlers and a baby I am usually washing my hands every few minutes- after every nappy change, toilet trip, after cleaning, before and after cooking etc. My hands are in and out of water all day.

I usually have to leave my rings off for a few says and moisturise excessively.

I use to get this as my ring got tighter when I put on weight - eventually I had to get it cut off & DH bought me a new bigger ring. That was nearly a year ago & the mark is only just fading. Ironically I've now lost weight & the new ring is too loose.

I often get this if I wear my rings 24hours a day. I now always take them off to shower and overnight. It's a form of dermatitis I believe. Hydrocortisone cream and some fresh air should help. Also clean your ring to ensure there is no trapped soap etc

TheThoughtPolice · 08/03/2009 19:30

contact dermatitis is very common under rings, especially wedding rings which are rarely removed.

I always get this when my DH is away and I am doing twice the amount of washing up/nappy changing/hand washing. I use Lotil cream, super cheap but really brilliant. I could kiss the pharmacist who first recommended it. It's prob just soap under your rings but please try this cream. It's only £2 or something. I too had tried all the nappy creams and e45 first and they just burned. I think you have to ask the pharmacist for it though.

Elibean · 08/03/2009 20:49

Phew. Not an allergy to dh then.

Thanks so much, will remove rings at night, try Lotil, see the gp if not better in a few days.

And yes, it does burn with all the other creams! Thats why I tried Canesten, started to wonder if the redness/burning meant under-ring-thrush

LOL at underring thrush, sounds vile! Good luck with the Lotil
