best option for avoiding periods that I've heard of is the mirena coil. The problem with the injection is that its not reversible (until it wears off) so if you get effects that you don't like, you just have to put up with them. I think it can also cause irregular bleeding which might be annoying.

I had to stop having the jabs because it gave me migraines. If you are on the pill and suffer from them then you can stop taking it, but with the jabs you have to wait for them to run out.

I've been on Depo Provera for 4 years now. Fantastic. No bleed whatsoever.

Edgarcat - I thinky ou can still gain weight much like the pill..

Lindy · 09/04/2003 19:35

Edgarcat - unlike Rhiannon I bled continuously with the injections* - yuck; am plucking up the courage to go for the mirena coil ...... but I have been bleating on about that for months on mumsnet without actually doing anything. *Also, nearly forgot this, bled for ages after the injections (despite going back on the pill) stopped so it was really difficult knowing when I got back to 'normal'

Rhubarb · 09/04/2003 21:28

My periods stopped, but then so did my sex drive. In fact I felt quite unemotional whilst I was on Depo Provera and that in itself caused a few problems. My sister also took the jab but experienced bleeding all the way through, and her sex life went down the drains too - maybe that's why it's so successful?

susanmt · 09/04/2003 21:33

I asked about having depo-provera but the obstetrician suggested mirena and I am really glad i took it - no periods and none of the other side effects I used to have - migrines, ovulation pain etc. Well worth the internal!

Furball · 09/04/2003 21:52

I also wanted the injection because of the 'embarassment factor' (Had Cesaerean, so didn't get any peering down there.)

But, was talked into the Mirena , because of my age and with me comming up to the menopause - I'm 36!!! I also don't want anymore children.

The fitting is not that bad - you lie on your side so they can't see your face and you can't see theirs, which helps.

I was advised to take a couple of painkillers an hour before. It was fine, I was really dreading it, it was uncomfortable but nothing like what I was fearing.

I bled for a couple of weeks after (normal) and that was that. I've had a few spots since and Hey presto.

I'd recommend it, sorry no help with the injection info though.

Weight gain? Probably, overweight anyway. When I had the 1st injection I bled for 17 days. The GP persuaded me to persevere and I haven't looked back.
