Does anyone know of an instant fix to a blocked ear? I can't hear a damn thing and it's giving me a headache!

I've got olive oil drops, but it's done nothing all day. Eating something makes it sound like 50,000 decibels in my head and I'm bored of it now.

Please help me!!!!

Err not much help, but have you tried holding your nose and blowing

Ear drops - Otex? Worked well for me.

A friend of mine did a DIY syringe job on my ear recently. We got a 50ml syringe (got it from work but you could try a chemist) then we filled the syringe with warm water and attached some thin tubing to the end of the syringe, stuck the other end in my ear and blasted away.

I can't do that! Never have been able to. It's all bubbly when I lean forward or tip my head. I think I might need a trip to the GP's for a syringe!

If you allow an unqualified person to syringe your ear, you could end up with a perforated eardrum. Was your friend trained stripey?

MaureenMLove · 08/03/2009 18:12

How successful was it then Stripey? Not that I'd be able to do it before tomorrow night! I have no syringes or plastic pipe!

No, not trained at all. I was desperate. It hurt less than when the nurse does it.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 08/03/2009 18:13

It worked fantasticly well. Took a couple of goes but then there was a pop and a huge plug of brown wax came out.

MaureenMLove · 08/03/2009 18:15

I love having my ear syringed. Is that odd? It's such a lovely warm feeling and it makes you feel proper clean afterwards! I have to tell people not to shout afterwards.

I love it too maureen

cocolepew · 08/03/2009 18:22

Yes, it's odd

I had a blocked ear in the Summer, I couldn't hear a thing. I was using the drops and putting cotton wool in to stop them falling out..
Eventually I went to get it syringed and the nurse pulled a lot of cotton wool out . She said I shouldn't have used it, but I pointed out it said on the label to do this.

Moral of the story is to step away from the cotton wool or face the embarassment of a nurse pulling it out of your ear like the magic trick with hankies.

MaureenMLove · 08/03/2009 18:29

Rest assured, I'm not using cotton wool. Instead, I have ear drops running down my neck, unless I sit with my head completely horizontal!

It's a good excuse to have a lie down for 15 minutes

piratecat · 08/03/2009 18:34

warm some olive or almond oil, well get it hot as you can bare it. lie on side, drop oil in and stay there for about half an hour. You dod have to have time for this tho, and repeat it over a few days. It can help the ear wax to soften and go of it's own accrod, but it might be too hard a plug, and you may need to get it syringed.

MaureenMLove · 08/03/2009 18:52

I'll do that later. Slight drawback though. Whatever I choose to watch on the TV at the time, I won't be able to hear, coz my hearing eat will be on the pillow! It's my telephone ear too! Does everyone have a telephone ear or is that just me being odd again?
