Toddler has eaten raw bacon - anything I can do to avoid her getting food poisoning?

2yo DD was "helping" me sort out the freezer, and took a shine to some defrosting bacon. I pulled about 1/2 rasher out of her mouth, but the rest appears to have been ingested.

Can I do anything after the event to stop her getting an upset tummy?

Thanks.

I'm sure she will be fine, bacon is really salty and shouldn't have anything nasty in it although not ideal to eat it.

fryalot · 08/03/2009 12:17

well, you could try giving her loads to drink and flushing it out of her system.

But in all honesty, she'll probably be fine.

The biggest issue would be worms, I suspect, rather than actual food poisoning.

Keep an eye out for her itching her bum or blood in her poo over the next few weeks.

thanks for the reassurance, though I'm at the prospect of worms. I guess I'm going to learn to be a bit less cavalier with supervising DD.

I used to chew raw bacon rinds as a child - on purpose! They tasted nice and I think, if I remember correctly, my mother used to let us.

I wouldn't do it now, mind you - the idea makes me want to heave but that is because of personal preference rather than because I realise I was dicing with death!

I never had worms or food poisoning as far as I know. I suspect food hygiene standards are better now than they were then so there is even less to worry about.

She will probably be OK.

paddingtonbore · 08/03/2009 12:32

urrgh, niecie !

nice to hear from someone who's been there. I'm normally dead relaxed about this sort of thing (eating worm, dirt etc) but for some reason I had it in my head that raw pork is Riddled With Nasties.

DD is rather put out at being stopped, and can't see what all the fuss is about.

I thoguth raw pork was a parasite (worm) risk but bacon was OK as it was cured.

nettie · 08/03/2009 14:13

So did I Niecie!

Am vegetarian now

I wouldn't worry about it if i were you, far worse things she could eat.

smudgethepuppydog · 08/03/2009 14:16

Bacon's fine. It's been cured. No risk of worms or food poisoning, I had a friend who used to eat raw bacon and sausages for the shock factor and never suffered any ill effects.

WriggleJiggle · 08/03/2009 14:18

Don't worry too much, dd went through a stage of raiding the fridge for raw bacon - in the end I stopped buying it for a while as it became a daily occurence!

Oh, and she never suffered any ill effects from it.

bronze · 08/03/2009 14:21

never had pancetta or the like then?

dinny · 08/03/2009 14:27

ha ha, dh's favourite snack used to be raw bacon rinds after school at his granny's!

sure your dd will be fine!

scrooged · 08/03/2009 14:28

My little brother used to eat raw bacon (he'd help himself ) He never had food poisoning.

She will be fine

paddingtonbore · 08/03/2009 15:37

cool. you lot are great. though I do of course now feel like a daft PFB mother of the worst kind .

I can only be cool, calm and collected because it wasn't my DC. Had my PFB eaten raw bacon as a child I'd probably have posted very similar to what you did.
