Any eye experts out there? I can see weird black wiggy lines

I have spent most of the day getting myself in a right state about a weird black wiggly line I have in my eye. It was right in my line of vision earlier, which is why I think I initially spotted it when staring at a white wall (God that makes me sound interesting.. I do normally spend my time doing more interesting things I hasten to add)

I then tried to move it by looking up and down, it kept moving about but it did move from my line of vision. I then promptly had to put my head down between my knees for a bit because I'm extremely squeamish about eyes and nearly passed out..

I have now been staring at another white wall and seen I have one in the other eye too. Should I be worried? Should I just stop staring at walls? or should I see an optician?

This may be a visual migraine. Has it gone away now? By your username, it looks like you may be very tired - this is a big factor in visual migraines.

I expect it's a floater, and nothing to worry about. I have one in my right eye which I can see when I look for it, sometimes I notice by chance, and other times am completely unaware of.

Possibly not a migraine but 'floaters'. I have them as well. I saw a specialist and they are relatively harmless.

You should see an optician if they have come on suddenly though.

I am extremely tired, hardly had a full nights sleep in over 2 years.. Just had to go and stare at a white wall to see them and they are still there, one in each eye, at least I have a matching pair... It does sound like they could be floaters, could they have been there a while and I have not noticed? It was only that I looked at a bright white wall earlier and noticed them. Oh now I'm worrying that they might have appeared suddenly, is that a cause for concern

Oh dear I just noticed I typed wiggy lines in the title obviously I meant wiggly, I blame the wiggly lines for the typo.

I have tonnes of floaters. They are much more common in short sighted people, but anyone can get them. Most of the time you are unaware of them, but if you are tired, and/or your eyes are sore, and/or it's a bright sunny day and/or you're looking at a white page (or white wall), they seem to show up more, but you can float them out of the way by rolling your eyes around. If you suddenly get lots of them, I think it can be a sign of a detaching retina, so should be checked out before permanent damage is done, but if it's really just a couple, then they've probably been there a little while and you've only just noticed - particularly if it's one in each eye, as you would be pretty unlucky to get detached retinas in both eyes at the same time (unless you've recently had a nasty knock on the head or have been bungee jumping!!!). Still, there's never any harm in getting these things checked out, if it's bothering you. An optician could do a thorough check for you.

Agree with previous posters. They sound like floaters, but we don't worry about a gradual increase in the number of floaters. I would be worried if someone said they suddenly saw a lot of new floaters, if they were accompanied by flashing lights or if the spot doesn't move around but appears to be staying in the same spot in the eye all the time and obstructing vision.
I would have an eye check anyway to be on the safe side but I would fully expect that everything is normal.
They are annoying, though!

I had a vitreous detachment while away in Budapest. Scared the bejesus out of me as I was sure it was a retinal detachment. But it resolved over a 10 hour period which a RD wouldn't have done. In a way it was good as it helps me appreciate how scared my patients feel when they have a visual disturbance.

i have a little black spot in my vision in my right eye been there for 2 years
optician says its nothing to worry about

I think I'm definitely going to try and see an optician as this morning I can see 3 in my left eye and they're right in my line of vision. I haven't seen an optician for years, do you have to book in advance? or is there anywhere I can just walk in today?

I've had floaters for years, what looks like a little money spider in my left and railway tracks in my right. I have regular eye check ups at the hospital for another problem and the doctors there are not worried.

chipmonkey · 09/03/2009 18:05

Mostly for places like Specsavers and Vision Express, you can just walk in but IME ( from working in a pracice like that!)if you do that you can be waiting over an hour to be seen. I would recommend you ring ahead and get an appointment.
