Any diabetics with impaired renal function out there?

Had a blood test on Monday. Received a letter from my gp on Weds saying my renal function was impaired and to make an appointment. Managed to get one for tomorrow (did not even have to fight for one!!)

Any diabetics out there had this? Just curious (and a little apprehensive).

Not diabetic but I work (in an admin/managerial capacity NOT medical) in a renal unit. My understanding is that diabetes is one of the risk factors for developing renal disease. But - chronic renal disease (if that's what you have) can be a very, very slow moving process and it can be literally years -if ever- before people need renal replacement therapy - such as dialysis or transplant. Remember - you only need one well functioing kidney to get by and people live well and good lives with very varying levels of renal function.

However it is important to get this checked and take any necessary steps. You may need to see a renal consultant (nephrologist) and/or be on some medications. Blood pressure control is very important, as of course is your diabetic control. Good luck with your appointment and I'm sure other more informed folks will be along soon!

Gosh - I bet that's the only time somebody is delighted to hear they have high cholesterol!! Very bad that they've sent you the wrong letter though - I hope your GP was going to take it up with the admin team?

Yes, it will be a saucer of skimmed milk for me now instead of my usual bowl of full fat cream.
