Did anyone take a really really long time to get their period back after a baby?

I ask as it's been 21 months and nothing, seemingly, going on in that department. Is this normal? I am still bfing, presumably that makes a difference.

TIA x

My friend bf her first for about 18 months and she didn't have a period between the first and second child, she did fall pregnant as soon as she stopped bf even though she hadn't seen a period.

My sil bf for a long time but her periods returned within a couple of months.

Mine came back at 8 weeks twice, then the 3rd baby it was 9mths. I breastfed all of them, so was gutted when they came back so early.

I think it's totally normal for some woman not to get periods til they stop breastfeeding, although with others it comes back when they child drops feeds or sleeps longer in the night.

I'm sure I saw somewhere that the average return of periods for breast feeding mothers was nearly 2 years, but I can't remember where I read it.

BTW, sorry for TMI, but it wasn't pads I needed when it did return after the last one, it was canoes!

Thanks and I appreciate the headsup MSL

Think I've blocked it out from last time. It did come back as soon as I stopped bfing that time, he was about 16mo I think.

It's making me a bit that perhaps I'm just not very, erm, furtle.

I don't think fertility has anything to do with it. As I said my friend got pregnant immediately, she didn't think she was fertile either.

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 05/03/2009 17:20

You could try an ovulation test to see if you're still ovulating.

mankyscotslass · 05/03/2009 17:22

I wouldn't worry about that tbh, a friend of mine has a gorgeous 12 week old that she conceived while still BF her second daughter, with no periods!!

I sort of know what you mean though, I can remember the doctor couldn't wait to get me on the mini pill when my periods returned with the first two! He kept saying I must be very fertile, but I know now that it's not that simple!

Flightattendant27 · 05/03/2009 17:25

Thanks.

It's just everyone I have seen on here and my friends also, have all got theirs back - having another baby isn't an issue for me now anyway, but I am kind of envious of people who can have children close together.

Never mind! Probably not worth worrying about is it.

I totally understand.

But the other side of the coin is I am so jealous of you.....you have no period (mine are horrendous now), and you still have lovely snuggly feeds with LO.

My last self weaned at 22 months, and I still miss it now.

Flightattendant27 · 05/03/2009 17:35

Oh I'm sorry

See I don't really miss the periods. But I am given new hope by the thought of self weaning in a MONTH! Yippeee!!

(have been trying to get him otherwise attached for sooo long, as I keep getting blocked ducts!)

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 05/03/2009 21:40

I totally sympathise!
I never ever had any blocked ducts til the last Manky. I have fed him longer than the other two, but from 11mths on it was one blocked duct after another! I ended up feeding just from one boob. Lopsided does not even come close to describing me, lol!
I think I miss it so much because this time I could feed as long as I wanted and he chose to end it sooner than I was ready for.
I never planned really for it to happen, it just dawned on me one day he wasn't asking for "milky" any more, and then he stopped asking at bedtime too.

I miss it.

psychomum5 · 05/03/2009 21:42

my priod never came back until axactly 4wks (to the day), that I gave my last breast feed, so you sound quite normal to me.

christywhisty · 05/03/2009 21:51

same as psychomum

Flightattendant27 · 06/03/2009 06:31

Thankyou

Manky - that is sad

I know I will miss it badly when he does stop. perhaps that's why I can't quite enforce it.

I never had problems with ds1, either - it was after about 10/11m with ds2 that I started getting problems, just with one side - does stopping using that side work? I thought about it and it's the side I use less anyway, so maybe that's the answer.

Feeding on one side worked for me. I was unsure about it, but I never had any problems.

Like you the side I got blocked ducts on was not his favourite anyway!

Flightattendant27 · 06/03/2009 08:09

Oh wicked. Thankyou

Might have to ease off so it doesn't get engorged though.
