Is there anything I can do to stop myself becoming a shrieking harpy every month?

Since starting my periods again after having DD2 I have hideous PMT. So much so that although my cycle is still irregular after not having any for over 3 years (pregnant and/or breastfeeding) DH can easily tell when I am 3 days off my period, and (very carefully) points it out to me so I can stock up on tampax!

Is there anything to stop the raging hormones?!

(getting pregnant again is not an option...I have a Mirena Coil fitted if that makes a difference.)

I know I keep saying this but the only thing that works is reflexology!

JackBauer · 04/03/2009 20:11

You've never said it to me, am searching archives now though so might find it.
Is there anything I can do? Being a SAHM time and money are not really freely available!

Evening primrose oil helped me but you have to wait a month or two for it to start working and take it every day, with double doses in the week before your period. Also means you get nice nails too, helps strengthen them.

Trinityrhino · 04/03/2009 20:14

I have the implanon
still bf
and suddenly have hideous pmt
screaming at the kids
white hot anger

I really need some help

cant afford reflexology

Trinityrhino · 04/03/2009 20:14

can I take evening primrose whilst bf?

bellaboobum · 04/03/2009 20:23

not sure, can't take when preg as too much Vit A, but b/f might be OK.

JackBauer · 04/03/2009 20:27

Trinity, join the club, forgot to mention I am BFing DD2 still.
I have been horrible to DD's today. Had to leave the room and scream and kick a pillow about in the bedroom. poor DD1 is exhausted as she is only on ehr 2nd week of school, had gym class today and I am being nastymummy.

reflexogoy is 25 quid a session, but how many of those would i need? 1 a month (at most) would be all I could afford.

What about agnus castus? have seen something about that while searching archive?

mine was terrible and some blood tests found I had a terribly low ferritin took some iron and now back to normal

disclaimer as normal as I was

bolshybolshevik · 04/03/2009 20:47

Mine is awful since having dd, I dont know if its becasue I'm no longer on the pill but its getting out of control TBH

Wish I knew how to control it

JackBauer · 04/03/2009 20:50

Might have somethign to do with coming off the pill too. Before DD's I was on the pill for about 5 years, then got pregnant within 6 months, then no periods until late last year, so I had forgotten how bad it was.

for those interested in reflexology, but are short on cash, find out if there are any training courses in your area. They are always looking for guinea pigs for students - why I did my course I had to have 6 case studies giving them 10 treatments and also used to do treatments in class. Any student would love to have someone with chronic PMT to help sort out.

In terms of how many, I would really recommend weekly for about 6 weeks and then tailing off to one a fortnight/month as your symptoms become more manageable.

Here are the aor accredited centres but there are others.

I don't practise by the way so am not pitching for business

megcleary · 04/03/2009 21:00

JB I was on the depot injections for years and no periods so had a dim recollection of how crap I used to feel but this was worse

popped to the GP who informed me i had PND i was shocked and disagreed, went to a different GP about hip pain a week later and she did some blood test found my ferritin low other GP rang, apologised and I statred iron tablets within a month or two it was a lot better

Dull story but my point is pop to the GP and have some blood work done

Nontoxic · 04/03/2009 21:12

Another vote for evening primrose - it supports the reproductive system and helps regulate the hormones.

BettySwollux · 04/03/2009 21:19

Hormonal balance by seven seas, they cost around £4 for 30 pills, get them from superdrug.
They include, zinc, magnesium and vit b6.
Theyve made the world of difference to me.
I think you can also take evening primrose/starflower with them if you want.
Takes a month(ish) to get into your system, but I swear they changed my life (and DHs ).

steviesgirl · 04/03/2009 23:24

I take "Floresse" which is Starflower Oil in capsules, a bit like Evening Primrose but double the strength and I am much sweeter near that dreaded time! Definitely seems to work better that Evening Primrose for me. I got it in the supermarket and it's sold in a box with 3 blister packs.

Worth a try.

This has also helped me a lot, might be worth a try?

saramoon · 06/03/2009 12:11

Starflower oil, agnus castus, mirena coil out? Lots of people on here (including myself) have found that the mirena coil has given them horrendous pmt symptoms. Might have something to do with it.

JackBauer · 06/03/2009 15:02

Thanks for advice. I did have bloods done recently as I was knackered all the time to check Iron levels, but they came out fine so have ordered some agnus castus to try for a fwe months.
I am slightly relieved to hear that about mirena (although it obviously sucks for everyone els ewho has one!) as I don'r ever remember it being this bad, but then I didn't have to deal with DC@s back then!
