Anyone out there know anything about Motilium? I've a bottle of it that was give to me on prescription 3 years ago when my son had a bad stomach bug. He never used it, although I had a dose when I caught it from him!

I see you can now buy Motilium 10 tablets over the counter. So is it safe to take to deal with the occasional stomach bug? Obv the bottle I have has a child's dosage marked.

And the bottle I have expires 07/2008, so how much attention to I need to pay to that?!

What does Motilium do?

The reason I ask is because my wife has been thinking of getting it for her IBS and general feeling of bloating and nausea she is getting.

Anyone know if it works for that?

That's what I'm thinking, DS has been sick this pm and if I get it it's a problem, as DH is not around and I've a baby to look after (not b/f). Just wondered if there was a problem in using it - was prescribed by a locum but when I mentioned it to my usual GP she was really surprised I had it. Then I saw it was being sold over the counter so thought it must be OK for general use.

The expiry date on medicines can sometimes mean that it just won't work anymore (as a pharmacist friend once told me)

just get some more?

Sorry beta-dad, x-posts. It did work when I used it before, with v severe vomiting. Think it forces the food out of your stomach quicker - closes the top stomach muscles and loosens the bottom ones. They give it to you before general anaesthetic too, to empty your stomach. Query is, how potent is it and what are the downsides to using it?

Sheeta, when I got it it was prescription only, and my usual GP wasn't looking too pleased about me having it - not sure why. I suppose the Motilium 10 you can get over the counter now must be the same stuff.

bellaboobum - many thanks for that.

Does it work and does it have any side effects? Is it for only occassional use?

ClareyP · 05/03/2009 20:31

The other name for Motilium is Domperidone and it's used where I work on Special Care to increase the gastric motility in babies who have bad reflux to make the milk digest quicker resulting in less chance of it being regurgitated. Don't know how it would work in adults, sorry.
If it's expired last July theoretically it should be chucked, but that's what we have to do in hospital...

I have domperidone for nausea caused by chemo and the nurses told me it was great for hangovers too! I can report that the twice I have used it it was very effective for that. It works quite well for my chemo nausea.

Thanks. DS was really dehydrated with the sickness bug (I thought that might happen which was why I posted the OP) and as he couldn't keep water down the doc prescribed a fresh bottle which worked wonders! If the bug gets me I think I may use it myself. And shall try to resist the temptation for hangover use!
