Scan at 7wks + 2 days - no heartbeat but quite high HCG levels 6,540

Had a scan this morning and they couldn't detect a heartbeat nor could they see the yolk sac. Sizing a little small too so not a great sign. HCG levels quite high at 6,540 so another blood test booked for Thursday to see if HCG levels rising. Has anyone had a similarly gloomy prognosis at this stage and then had a positive outcome? TIA

I also had a scan today and by my calculation would be 7 wks tomorrow. I believe it is quite normal for them not to pick up a heartbeat at this early stage, they couldn't with me. They did however find the sac and showed me but it was tiny. Took blood but didn't give me any result. Why did you have the scan?. I have been told I have a threatened miscarriage at the moment.

Hi 4jen - thanks for your response. Had the scan because I previously had a missed miscarriage. Best of luck - hope things work out well.

Hi extremelychocolateymilkroll

Yes - I have. I can't remember the exact details, however I had an early scan about 7 weeks, with nothing visible. To make matters worse I had the HCG bloods done too, and they did not quite double as expected. Had another scan at 9 weeks and heartbeat detected. Size of embryo was measuring less than expected for gestation (and I was SURE of my dates) so I still expected to miscarry. Waited it out until 12 week scan - and embryo was bang on (my) dates for size. All went well and have lovely ds. Good luck to you!

Thanks Prentice - reassuring to hear that you had a positive outcome with a similar start. Helps me think that there is still hope.

Thanks extremelychocolateymilkroll, I guess we will both just have to wait and see. I'm having quite strong pain today so I'm not hopeful. If you are not having any symptoms then hopefully it was just too early to pick much up on the scan.

Thanks 4jen. Sorry that you're having strong pain. Fingers crossed that it doesn't mean anything. Is this your first pregnancy?

No 2nd pregnancy, DD nearly 3. I have read and heard lots of conflicting stuff seems the chances are 50/50 in this situation, however the ongoing period pain and bleeding make me think the worst. When will you have another scan?, maybe they will pick up more next time. Would this be your first baby?.

Hi 4jen - sorry to hear you are having period pain and bleeding. MN is so useful at times like this, isn't it?

When I had my missed miscarriage I only discovered at the 12 week scan and had no symptoms beforehand. We were then lucky enough to have dd who is now 18 months so, as I am now 41 any addition would really be a bonus for us. If the HcG levels have risen tomorrow then I think a scan was proposed in a week's time. Have you had your blood test results? What is the next step for you?

Had results of today's blood test and HcG levels 7,863 - on Tuesday they were 6,540 so obviously not looking good. I have another scan booked for next Tuesday and will have another blood test then.

Hi extremelychocolateymilkroll, sorry to hear things aren't good with the blood test results, best of luck for the scan.
After a lot of pain and bleeding on wednesday, I woke up Thursday and just felt different and knew I was no longer pregnant. I then saw the evidence when I went to the loo. Saw my G.P. today who was great and has put me on antibiotics to make sure I don't get any infection and wants me to go back for a scan to make sure everything has come out. I'm also 37, so feel lucky to have my DD and realise that having another is a bonus. It is hard but I accept that miscarriage happens for a good reason, things aren't right and we can't change that.

extremelychocolateymilkroll · 06/03/2009 22:30

Hi 4jen Sorry to hear what happened. Are you still in pain and if so were you given anything for the pain? I agree with you that miscarriage happens for a good reason - hard though that is to accept. This outlook helped when I had my missed miscarriage. Also, I know of people who miscarried when they were 5 months pregnant - which must be truly horrendous - and this made me feel a bit better. I know this approach doesn't help everyone but it did me.

At 37 and with a 3 year old you are a spring chicken! Sending you lots of hugs and hope that you feel better soon.
