Im not sure if i need to go docs or not.
Came into contact with pox in half term as DSD had it, i knew my 2 had had the pox so didnt really think twice about having her.
Last thursday i started to break out in a rash, its raised pin pricks that have got bigger and blistered, it is predominently on my right hand side arm and leg but i do have small clusters on my left arm and across my tummy too.
The rash i very itchy but i dont fell ill as such just very lethargic and achey apart from that i am fine.

is it possible it could be shingles even though i feel fine or is it worth a trip to the doctors?

You don't catch shingles from chicken pox.

You can only develop shingles if you have previously had chicken pox and the virus remains in your body waiting for an opportunitelmy to come out as shingles, this can happen when you are tired and run down.

Shingles is usually very painful. If you are not sure it is shingles, then I would see your GP.

Doesn't sound like shingles. Firstly, you can't catch shingles from chickenpox, you have to have had chickenpox, then the virus lies dormant in your nervous system and re-emerges as shingles if you get really run-down. The rash is usually in a 'stripe' (ie straight line) as it follows the nerve, and is usually on one side of the body only.

Hope it goes soon.

It is very painful too.

Another possibility is an allergic reaction or a viral rash.

noddyholder · 03/03/2009 08:50

You can't catch it but if you have had chicken pox and come into contact the virus can be re activated just as it can from being run down or sun exposure,I an immunosuppressed and have had it following chicken pox contact twice.

apparently shingles is always on just one side of the body.
so it doesn't sound like it. But if you still think it might be then DO go to the dr, anti-virals taken early make a HUGE difference!

i didnt even think of shingles to be honest and have just put up with the rash even though it is sore and very itchy. It does go in a line up my right arm and is in a line on my right leg, the rash on my left side is more clustered than linear! I wondered if it ould be allergy related but i havent changed or introduced anything into my diet or cleaning products etc. I have not had a cold or virus so know its not that!
It was only because an elderly neighbour saw my arm this morning and got worried it was shingles that i even considered it. TBH im not in pain so probably wont go to doctors as it seems a bit of an over reaction.
how long should i wait for this rash to go though?

Are you sure it's not chicken pox?!

SoupDragon · 03/03/2009 09:05

You can get it more than once.

belgo · 03/03/2009 09:06

yes I wondered chicken pox

shingles can appear on both sides of your body. I know this because I had it a few years ago. Also agree that it can re-appear when you are run down or in contact with chickenpox.

I have had a couple of minor flare ups of shingles since but nothing as bet (yet) as the first time. It lasted a fortnight and was wiped out for a while after too. Felt very weepy, tired, achy and all of my skin top to toe was tender and sore. Sleeping was very hard as it hurt to lie on the rash and could never quite get comfy.

Non identified rashes can last for 24 hours or days and days. I have no idea when I would call in to the GP. I guess the best thing is to monitor the rash sites and if it is spreading or you start to notice other more dramatic symptoms (high temp etc) then give your surgery a ring for advice. Hope it disappears soon!

mmmmmmmmmmmm but only one or 2 of the spots have blistered, the rest are more dry raised pin pricks that itch like mad! i did have pox as a kid but i suppose it could be. Either way it seems silly to bother the doc doesnt it unless i feel poorly?
