well there's the finger up the bum test.
the GP feels the surface of the prostate with a gloved finger. it should be smooth, not rough.

so he just goe's to the gp.
I saw a thing on GMTV about it, so have told dh he should get it done, seeing I have just had a smear and a coil fitted.

They can also look for raised levels of psa?) in wee and then do blood test if it is above the norm , but that may be for slightly older men. Some areas have mobile clinics like for breast screening

2shoes · 27/02/2009 18:27

how old is slightly older?

Mine's had a psa blood test

here is some info

PuddingChops · 27/02/2009 18:47

LIZS - I didnt think they could measure PSA levels from wee. I thought it had to be from a blood test. Thats how they do it with my Dad.

DogMa · 27/02/2009 18:49

They tend not to test before the man reaches 45 to 50 years.

The standard test is the PSA.

You can request a test earlier but the GP will probably put you off unless there is a reason. Just to put your mind at rest probably won't cut it as a reason.

Its probably worth him finding out a bit about it first - prostate cancer screening is controversial, as cancerous changes within the prostate are very common in older men, and may never cause any problems.
This means that in a screening programme there will be some men detected as having prostate cancer, who will then go on to have treatment (which can be quite major surgery), who actually have a very slow growing cancer that would never have caused them any problems.
Apparently 80% of men in thier seventies have prostate cancer if you take a biopsy of their prostate, but most of these men will die of something else, without ever developing symptoms of prostate cancer.

Thats not to say that he should or shouldnt seek screening, just that the arguements arent as clear cut as some other screening programmes.

Sorry, could be psa in blood only. I know my dad, who was treated for early stage prostate cancer just over a year ago , gives samples of both when his levels are tested. tltb agree with that , his could have been left and monitored but he chose to have radiotherapy.

2shoes if your dh is concerned but is younger he could still discuss it with his gp. It is unusual but not unknown under 50. However similar symptoms can have a number of causes.

loopylou6 · 28/02/2009 11:06

my dad had a scare with it a while back, he had problems weeing, went the gp who did the up the bum prostate feeling, said it was enlarged, sent him for a scan, which didnt show much, then they took his blood to see if it was within normal levels (the psa) which thankfully it was, they diagnosed him with prostatic hyperplasia. when you send your dh to the docs, i suggest you dont let on about the finger up the bum it
