Bad stomach- any ideas?

Have name changed as am feeling a bit daft and tearful.

OK- long story short..before Christmas I had a bout of thrush, cleared up with a canesten pill and cream.

At around the same time I started to get stomach gripes every now and then. By gripes I mean a general soreness in the upper abdomen, not the intestines. No sickness or diarrhea. This has now gone on for almost 3 mths. It's not actually debilitating, as I said, it's just sore. I've been down the Gaviscon route, there is also a lot of stomach wind involved (burpy wind though, not intestinal wind) and a sort of permanent bloating.

The GP has given me PPIs to take for 2 weeks and says she thinks it's gastritis. (which I take to be a general medical term for griping belly!) Have now done 1 week of them, tomorrow am due to start another week at a lower dose, but haven't noticed any difference. Yesterday I felt quite good, today it's been particularly gripey. Sometimes the soreness is slightly to the left, sometimes slightly to the right, but more usually just the general stomach area.Sometimes it ever so slightly goes into my back...(kind of how I imagine babies feel when they need to be burped, like air is passing through me and making me sore)

It doesn't seem to matter what I eat- although eating something does make it feel a bit better. When I wake up in the morning, I'm fine, after a cup of coffee and breakfast it starts to hurt.

I think that's it. Of course I've been googling all the nasty things it could be hence feeling daft and tearful.

Thanks for listening.

Female- check
Fertile- guess so?
Forties- check (43)
Fat- no, but not thin either
Fair- check.

Just been reading the site link, and the revolting things one has to eat/drink....bizarrely had mad craving for beetroot last week, so currently have a fridge full.

mmmmm. i'm female...fertile..not fat(not skinny..probably normal) and not really fair skinned...but I have had 2 kids very close together..did drink bit too much red wine after my daughter and did lose quite a lot of weight after she was born and I smoke 7-8 fags a day...which are other factors...apparently.
What about you guys?

PoorlyTum · 04/03/2009 13:30

Used to drink too much of everything- but have been extended bfer so not really drunk anything for 5 yrs....don't smoke. I was v skinny after having dd- went down to about 9st (and am nearly 6ft tall so lots to spread it out over)

I eat far too much pasta- I also started to think it might be a wheat thing. Toast, pasta every day virtually.

Oh, just reading on that link about sugar cravings- I get that as well, not just a need-a-bit-of-chocolate kind of thing- I've started putting 3, 4 and sometimes 5 spoons in a tea or coffee. (been thinking I was probably borderline diabetic which also runs in the family)

lol at the beetroot poorly tum; they say our body will tell us what it needs, so there might be something in it. I bought some flaked flaxseed that I have been having in fat free yogurt or on my rice crispies (with skimmed milk). It is meant to be liver cleansing. Organic produce is preferable too.

I am all of the F's (although only just in my forties; first attack two weeks after my 40th birthday!) and also had two babies in quick succession.

One thing though, I had previously cut out coffee for another health issue, and was drinking decaf tea, but have been drinking herbal teas since last week. It isn't too bad once you get used to it.

eastergirl · 04/03/2009 14:05

so am I right in saying you just get gallstones and thats that...some people can live with them and some not?
I feel fighting fit in every other sense.Just this really annoying thing. I read that link, very useful...the fullness/distention thing rings true.
Funny..day started of ok...now getting more noticeable.Ate Special K for breakfast and go ahead bar...fine. Then 2 biscuits...high fat...then low fat crackers...wondered if it was the biscuits???
Am 37 and didn't realise that life doesn't begin at 40...we get loads of crap wrong with us!!!!

LackaDAISYcal · 04/03/2009 14:54

apparently lots of people have stones and are totally symptom free but others have endless hassle.

It's another of those silly organs that we can live quite happily without but if you have one and it goes wrong it's mega painful and can be life threatening!

Can't wait to get rid of mine now!!

PoorlyTum · 04/03/2009 15:22

My Mum went for a scan for her piles (lol) and her 3 whoppers were picked up then. She had no symptoms...

family history can be a factor as well poorlytum!

Bucharest · 06/03/2009 09:38

Resurrecting this under my non-tearful name- it's me PoorlyTum aka Bucharest...

Just wanted to say, am eating beetroot like a madwoman, and (I'm sure it's part psychological) but it's like taking a painkiller- I feel almost an instantaneous easing of the soreness!

Have been out and bought GreenSoup ingredients from that website this morning- so my organs will be well and truly detoxed!

Thanks again for tha link LackaDAISYcal- am going to healthfood shop tomorrow (we haven't got one in this schtoopid town) to find flax seeds for the yeurchy tea.....

Even if it isn't my gallbladder, all my other organs will be heaving a sigh of relief with all this good nutrition!

eastergirl · 06/03/2009 10:32

well thats interesting Bucharest....Mine been not half as bad....not eating sandwiches..so no bread and eating those activea yougurts.
Bit less bloated and not half as much a niggly ache.
Keep hoping thats it and it's IBS which I know isn't nice but I can deal with that as long as not serious!
Mmm...green soup....beetroot...that sounds disgusting. Do they recommend chocolate soup????!!!

Bucharest · 06/03/2009 10:47

'fraid not.....and when I succumbed to 3 chocolate biscuits yesterday afternoon, the soreness came on almost immediately....

eastergirl · 06/03/2009 12:37

yes..me too...can't make my mind up if it's food related.. It's definietly worse if bit constipated...well not been for 24hrs and definetly worse if I don't eat regulary or eat too much(like evening meal seems to bloat me up)

eastergirl · 16/03/2009 12:23

Poorly tum/bucharest...how are you feeling?

Bucharest · 16/03/2009 12:41

Hi Eastergirl- I was thinking about you this morning when reading Lackadaisy's thread- did you see she's had her op?

I've got an appt for a scan on 20th April....I've been feeling a lot better because I've been very careful with what I eat...loads of beetroot, brown rice, courgettes etc...and smaller portions....That said, I feel like shite this morning as I succumbed to fried artichokes last night (reasoning foolishly that the goodness the artichokes would do to my liver would outweigh the "fried" bit....hmmm, it clearly didn't! hence have brown rice simmering as we speak....)

How about you? Did you go to the docs?

eastergirl · 16/03/2009 13:04

no haven't gone.
It was fine last week. But back ache been bad last two days and like a stitch thing you can't get rid off.
I am debating whether it is food related...Went to parents at weekend had sausage roll and sticky doughnut thing on Saturday and it's been achy since then..plus have my period.Don't really eat stuff like that...imagine all the fat in it...straight from bakers
I've pretty much cut out bread...seems to help.Evening bloating has stopped.
Gonna have to see doc's...wish I never googled it!
Did yours symptoms seem to come on because of food in the first place? Or does it just happen for no reason?

Bucharest · 16/03/2009 13:13

I'm not sure tbh- as I think it came on gradually- but just before Christmas we did have a weekend where we had a fridge full of seafoody stuff- squid and the like, and as dd loves it deep fried, we did binge a bit...and of course had it with chips....that was when I first noticed it....doc said it was an irritated stomach due to eating crap....but then it continued on and off....and if you're anything like me, then you start obsessing about it....

Thing is, as well, virtually everything stomach-y or intestine-y gives the same symptoms....

Yours though could be something like IBS if you have bloating? I've even considered coeliac disease (I've considered every sodding disease as you know...I'll be fairly chuffed if it's "only" my gallbladder....)

It's amazing though just how many people at any one time are suffering...over the weekend I discovered my SIL is having tests and so is the dad of one of my students....I think it's something like 1 in 10 people have gallbladder issues....

eastergirl · 16/03/2009 13:27

yes thats true actually.
Just find it weird my husband has just had his gallbladder out..he's attacks were so bad we had to call paramedics.
I keep thinking it's my liver after what I googled and have nearly sent myself round the twist thinking about it. Although everyone I have spoke to said if your liver is poorly, you feel pretty poorly in yourself. I don't although everytime I get a bout of it like to today back ache really annoying, I get stressed about it and get palpations!!
The bloating is much better...like you the symptoms or actual spot it aches in varies.
I wish I had a doctor friend I could just ask!
perhaps we should do a thread and ask..there are normal some around.
