Mirena Coil - Advice

Eve4Walle · 24/02/2009 15:24

Has anyone got the Mirena Coil fitted?

If so, what's it like, does it hurt on insertion and what is your overall view of it?

I am considering having it fitted, just want some advice/reassurance before I go ahead.

I got pregnant with it in

DD is now 2.5

Other than that no problems

mosschops30 · 24/02/2009 15:30

I had one for almost 4 years and was the best thing ive ever had. I lost weight, periods stopped completely, no PMT, I loved it.
Was devastated to have it out to ttc no.3. Will have another one after though.

It did hurt to have it inserted, like a labour pain but my doctor told me exactly what was happening and when it would hurt etc. Lasted for a couple of days mild pain then was fine.

JennyWren · 24/02/2009 15:37

I have one and it is fantastic. No pain for me when it was fitted, and only a very mild crampy feeling later that afternoon. Everyone is different, though - my GP (I had it fitted my an experienced GP at my local medical centre) warned me it might be more uncomfortable. Having fairly recently delivered a 9lb 8oz baby might have helped - anything else was small fry!!!

I now have no periods, no pain and no problems - I'd highly recommend it, based on my experience. Why don't you give it a go - you can always have it taken out if it doesn't suit.

whyme2 · 24/02/2009 15:37

I would say it has been very good for me. A little painful on insertion but otherwise ok. No periods, a little pmt, Ifeel well, energetic etc and am slowly losing my baby weight.
It obviously doesn't suit everyone though.

I'm on my second one - first one I had for 5 years before having it removed to TTC. No periods in all that time, was crampy the first day, but nothing more after. Had this one fitted when DS was 12 weeks old, and didn't hurt at all.

It releases such small amounts of hormone, that apart from suppressing actual ovulation, and the effects on the lining of your uterus, you cycle normally. So if you get PMT without any hormonal contraception, you will on the Mirena.

Very easy to remove, so why not give it a try. I have a number of friends who use it and are very happy too.

I'd go to a family planning clinic to have it inserted as they are more experienced than GPs.

muddleduck · 24/02/2009 15:46

I've got on well with mine.
Very mild pain when it was put in and now have light intermittent periods.

BennyAndSwoon · 24/02/2009 15:49

Oh yes - not too painful having it put in, just like period pains for a little bit afterwards.

The BEST thing was I did have really heavy periods, and the gradually got less and less until they stopped. Unfortunately that meant that I didn't find out I was PG with DD until 19 weeks

Some people experience weight gain and (ahem) boils in the groin area and other stuff.

How do you get on with other hormonal contraception?

Eve4Walle · 24/02/2009 16:02

Well, have been on the pill, on and off since I was 18, and that's many years. Always got on okay, and was using the combined pill, and don't put on weight using it etc.

But since I had DS a year ago, I have become very forgetful about taking pill (I think it's because subconciously I know if I got pregnant again it would be okay and therefore, I'm not worried about remembering it).

DH and I would like another baby, but not yet, so he's not going to have the snip for the time being. So want to use it as an alternative to the pill really.

I too had awful side effects (psoriasis and depression/anxiety), but if you're lucky enough not to have side effects it is pain-free, hassle-free contraception with the added bonus of light/non-existent periods.

webstermum · 24/02/2009 16:18

I had an awful time with it, bad mood swings & depression. Also it went awol & threads couldnt be found, had to have it removed after 2 months. Sorry but on my experience I would say steer well clear

Molesworth · 24/02/2009 16:20

I'd say that if you've used hormonal methods of contraception in the past with no problems, then you'll probably be alright with the mirena. You can always have it removed (completely painless) if you don't get on with it.

CompareTheMeerkat · 24/02/2009 16:28

I had a mirena coil fitted in October and since then have had one period and no problems. It did hurt a lot having it put in and was crampy for a day or so but that was my only problem.

I was taking the pill and getting more forgetful about it and decided it was time to do something about it. I suffer in general from anxiety and depression and haven't had any more problems from having the coil.

Leanne5 · 25/02/2009 09:24

I have had 2. My first was ok no problems at all then my second one I've just had removed I hated it. I gained 1.5 stone in two years without changing my eating habbits. I have become so depressed and not stop crying, acne, hair loss. Bleeding after sex (when I actually had it as my libido went out the window) and spotting most of the month.

With is all i can say is you don't know how it will be till you try it. As for it being fitted it did not hurt just was slightly uncomfortable.

bellavita · 25/02/2009 09:29

I am having mine removed in a couple of weeks (has been in 5 years next month). I think that I have become an ogre over the last 5 years and hopefully my boys and DH will see a change in me for the better.

fakeblondie · 26/02/2009 10:37

I`ve had mine in 5 years and 6 months !
Cant decide whether to have it out or changed.

Its been good - no periods which is a help because i have a bad prolapse.

But no sex drive what so ever because i was always raring to go around ovulation - dont ovulate now so never seem to feel that lovely need to jump into bed with dh -
