Anyone suggest a "calpol" type medicine with no sugar substitutes?

Is there anything out there for babies without sorbitol, glycerin, aspartame or saccharine in terms of a paracetemol elixir? Why do they put such junk in remedies for children? Argh

I ahve been looking for one too. I am convinced that sweeteners make my son more hyperactive than sugar does!

soapbox · 13/04/2005 14:59

You can get normal calpol which is sweetened with sugar rather than artificial sweeteners.

Boots stock it but unless you ask for it they will usually give you the sugar free version!

triceratops · 13/04/2005 14:59

Can't you get calpol with sugar in it? Or use an adult soluble paracetemol and add your own wholesome ingredients. I used to have one crushed up on a teaspoon of jam when I was a small child. It was disgusting.

mamadadawahwah · 13/04/2005 15:03

Yes, i refused the nhs stuff cause it had artificial sweeteners so they gave me calpol. When i got home though, and read ingredients, its full of sorbitol which is much worse than sugar. I would just prefer plain sugar if anything.

Yes - but you were probably given the sugar-free calpol!

There is a sugar sweetened version but for some reason tehy always give teh sugar free one at the pharmacists as a default!

mamadadawahwah · 13/04/2005 15:06

oh! Darn, i didnt know that. Thanks for the info!!

good question mmddww,
it always drives me bonkers when you have the choice of totally crp calpol or partially crp!

ds thinks its a treat though!!

clary · 13/04/2005 15:08

yeah, full fat Calpol is what you want but as others say you have to ask for it specifically (and they give you a look as if to say "bad mummy")

beansontoast · 13/04/2005 15:08

even the sugary one has got all that rubbish in it!

beansontoast · 13/04/2005 15:09

i suppose the sugar is an issue at night..if its going to sit around their teeth doing damage!

mamadadawahwah · 13/04/2005 15:10

right heres the ingredients of the one i got. I think it is the "full fat" he he one.

Tell me if this is what they consider the one with sugar, if you know.

sucrose, sorbitol, glycerol and carmoisine (e122)yuck.

OP posts:
soapbox · 13/04/2005 15:10

Just checked - you are right even the full fat version has some sorbitol in it

Wonder why????

beansontoast · 13/04/2005 15:12

sorbitol is the bit that gives you that cool feeling in your mouth...that could be it?

mamadadawahwah · 13/04/2005 15:13

just googled carmoisine, its banned in sweden!

OP posts:
mamadadawahwah · 13/04/2005 15:13

and the usa, and austria, etc!

OP posts:
mamadadawahwah · 13/04/2005 15:15

Azorubine (carmoisine) , colouring, coal tar derivative, can produce bad reactions in asthmatics and people allergic to aspirin. Carmoisine E122 is banned in Sweden, USA, Austria and Norway

that is a grim grim finding...i do rely on calpol to take temperatures down etc...
drat..now im going to feel sick every time i do ..

dont suppose you want to try and find the ingredients in the nurofen suspension do you?

mamadadawahwah · 13/04/2005 15:23

nurofen, i have never tried that! I dont have any but maybe i can get it on the net. Will post if so.

Newbarnsleygirl · 13/04/2005 15:25

What about the paracetamol that you get on prescription?

We have been given some today and it tastes nothing like Calpol.

beansontoast · 13/04/2005 15:26

no i have never tried it ..hence dont have a bottle to read the ingredients to you..
but it is ibruprofen based rather than paracetemol....
however i suspect the additive list will read similarly.

mamadadawahwah · 13/04/2005 15:26

Nurofen for children:

dont know if they do one with sugar but just found this:

Also contains: Maltitol Syrup, Water, Glycerin, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Saccharin, Orange Flavour, Xanthan Gum, Polysorbate 80, Domiphen Bromide.

blech

mamadadawahwah · 13/04/2005 15:27

Yes, i think i will just crush down some paracetomol tablets and add a bit of sugar.

OP posts:
mamadadawahwah · 13/04/2005 15:28

Newbarnsley, that was the gist of this thread. I went today to get the nhs paracetomol solution and it is sugar free, i.e. it has saccharin in it.

Newbarnsleygirl · 13/04/2005 15:28

Nurofen

Propylene Glycol, Hydrogenated glucose syrup containing sorbitol and maltitol, Sodium benzoate (which I'm sure is in some fizzy drinks) sodium methylparaben (e219) and sodium propylparaben (E217)
