Always congested/bunged up especially at night/first thing in the morning

My DH is always bunged up at night.

I have replaced all of our bed covers/pillows with anti allergen products, we use non-bio ultra gentle washing powder, we sleep with the small window ajar, there is no heating on at night, he sleeps with 2 pillows etc etc

Anyone got any idea why this may be? It isn't occasional - it is all the time.

Is there anyone that can suggest a remedy? He gets really fed up being so congested all night and first thing. Once he's been up a while, it all sorts itself out and he fine again until the next night!

Any thoughts gratefully received.

What sort of pillows and duvets do you use? Feather or down always give me hayfever type symptoms, I have to use cotton or hollowfibre.

cmotdibbler · 23/02/2009 20:11

DS has been prescribed pseudo Ephidrine (Sudafed) to take at night to dry him up as he is runny and coughing at night. Works like a dream, and GP said fine to do long term

iheartdusty · 23/02/2009 20:16

it really does sound like an allergy, as you have suspected.

My sister is extremely allergic to dust mites; she has a top-of-range Dyson (sorry I don't know model) and she hoovers her bed every few days, has mattress covers, replaces duvets and pillow every few months, has no carpet in bedroom, no piles of clothes or clutter which could harbour dust. All this has helped her a great deal.

Have you tried googling for similar anti-dust mite things to try?

aznerak · 23/02/2009 21:19

we used to have down pillows, but I ditched those and replaced everything with hypo-allergenic stuff

Trying to get him to go to the doctors is like getting blood from a stone - he hates taking medication unless he is feeling on death's door but I have told him cmotdibbler about your DS.

Thanks iheartdusty, will do my best to eliminate dust in case it that - getting DH to stop creating piles of clothes and clutter will be a battle and a half!!!!! And we do have carpet too so its not looking good

It's probably dust mites, getting rid of the carpet really really helped but I'm just resigned to taking antihistamines for the rest of my life. I take piriton which doesn't make me drowsy and beconase spray.

InTheScrum · 23/02/2009 21:27

Allergic rhinitus. Antihistamines are the answer if you've already got rid of allergy causing bedding and vacuum very regularly.

Have you got double glazing? Sometimes mould spores can collect around the window if room isn't aired enough. The spores can cause allergic reactions or asthma symptoms.

InTheScrum · 23/02/2009 21:28

Sorry, just read OP again - you sleep with the window open!

brimfull · 23/02/2009 21:32

I am exactly the same.

Also get itchy ears and nose which wakes me up.

I have alwasy assumed it is dust mites. When we holidayed in greece in villa with tiled floors i slept like a baby.

I should get rid of carpets really

aznerak · 23/02/2009 21:46

its funny now as me and DH talking over all your comments and he said when we are at my parents villa in France, where it is fully tiled throughout, he is so much better

maybe the carpet plays a very big part in all this???

my family noticed the absence of my ritual morning honking
when we were in greece

aznerak · 23/02/2009 21:49

hmmmm but I like having a cosy carpet in the winter mornings....its all well and good in the south of France when its hot and you want cool floors but I am not quite so sure in dreary old England.....

you get used to it, I can get my slippers on without opening my eyes properly (even in the dark!)

InTheScrum · 23/02/2009 22:24

When I was a child the doctor told my parents to remove the carpet in my bedroom for my asthma.
So I had a cork floor - much warmer than tiles or vinyl, but still a bit chilly in a bedroom converted from the garage!
