BabyG has a pink pinprick rash on his chest and some nasty red patches (16 weeks) - Doc or see what happens?

Thats it really
He's fine in himself
Nappy area fine
Feeding, weeing and pooing as normal

The rash is all over his chest and tummy, raised pink pinpricks that disappear under a glass. Just under his chin (on his chest, his neck is hidden under rolls!!) are a couple of horrid looking red patches.

I don't use anything in bath water and only bath him once or twice a week (!)

Should I take him to the Docs or see how he goes? I haven't changed washing powder or anything/

Has he been unwell previously? I think they can get a kind of post-viral rash - Non-Specific Viral Rash or somesuch. I called NHS direct when dd had something similar, and they were very good - went through lots of checks with me. Maybe start there?

MamaG · 23/02/2009 16:29

He's had a bit of a cold - nothing bad though. I haven't had good experiences wiht NHS direct TBH, think its a pile 'o shite

Can you get a phone consultation with your GP?

notwavingjustironing · 23/02/2009 16:34

Sorry not much use on the medical front, but gosh is he already 16 weeks? Where has the time gone?

Hope you get some advice soon. What about ringing your GP and seeing if one of them will call you back after surgery this afternoon? Mine have done that for me for both my two in the past.

notwavingjustironing · 23/02/2009 16:34

sorry x-post with Habbibu

MamaG · 23/02/2009 16:36

Yes thats a good idea (phone call)

Could it be heat rash, it might sound stupid (as its feb) but it is humid for feb. I can remember dd2 having this when she was a few months old due to the temp change (in early spring).

MamaG · 24/02/2009 09:32

I cuo ldn't get a phone call, but it is a bit better today - as he's fine in himself I won't rush to the GP! I'll just keep an eye. I suppose it could be heat rash

I would say if he's fine in himself and it seems to be getting better to just keep an eye on it. Perhaps let him be nekkid for a while in case it is heat rash

MamaG · 24/02/2009 09:38

Yes, i'll give him a bath today and let him have a kick around on the rug afterwards (until he pees in my eye again)

Sounds viral from the description. Keep an eye out for fever, runny nose, change in behaviour.

FrannyandZooey · 24/02/2009 09:39

mamag, it sounds just like what ds2 had which turned out to be eczema
of course please check at doctor's
but meanwhile would do no harm to try an emollient cream (aveeno is nice one?) to moisturise skin all over - this may head it off

FrannyandZooey · 24/02/2009 09:40

if you bath him put olive oil or similar in bath - watch for slipping! then apply emollient straight after
baths dry out the skin

MamaG · 24/02/2009 09:44

Ah bugger eczema - I get it sometimes but not badly. I've just run out of flipping olive oil but I've got some grapeseed oil from baby massage - maybe that would be ok...

I'll try to get some emollient cream today (its hard to get anything decent where I live! Not many shops selling stuff like that). Maybe I'll try to get an appt with the practice nurse who could prescribe some nice cream for him

any news mamaG?

supergluebum · 25/02/2009 18:47

Try porridge oats in his bath water. A luke warm bath as often as you like and put the oats into an old sock or tights then run it under the tap when you're filling the bath.

Bit of talc before he goes to bed under his pjs. IME the porridge oats work a treat.

Klaw · 25/02/2009 18:48

without seeing pics it sounds like a viral rash to me.

DD had that recently, was totally out of sorts on Monday, rash appeared on front and back of torso and beside ears on Tuesday eve, Thursday there were bigger raised spots on her chin, and then Friday they blistered.

She sucks her fingers so I think that caused the rash to blister on her chin.

The rash kinda looked like a measles rash and slowly faded from the Tuesday to Friday. she was at her worst mood wise on the Monday before the spots appeared. She tired easily but was more herself the rest of the week.

You've got this experience to compare to so keep an eye on poor little BabyG

MamaG · 26/02/2009 13:30

The pinprick rash has now disappeared completely and the nasty bit under his chin is much better after I have been applying sudocreme - hopefully its just a dribble patch! Thanks for asking franny and the replies super and Klaw

(PS. Klaw- is there anywhere up there where we can hire a buggy for a week in April? I won't fit my pram in the boot!)
