Personally, I take a general purpose "multivitamin & iron", just ordinary ones from the supermarket, as I do find I get a bit rundown sometimes if I don't take them. Obviously the proper answer is "have a healthy balanced diet, plenty of water, sleep and exercise", but let's face it that's not always going to happen, and I think a general mix of vitamins plus iron as a top-up is a good idea when you're either rundown from something or know that you're not doing great at the balanced diet.

Iron is certainly one which you'll feel rundown if you're short on, but if you're feeling bad then it's probably worth getting the doc to check out your iron level in case there's something which needs proper treatment.

I take spatone (iron) when I'm feeling really tired. I definitely feel it working. I take others sometimes too but I'm quite sceptical about them working.

Multibionta probiotic multivitamin, trying to cover everything. I was surprised to find I did notice a difference when I stopped taking them, more tired, I think it's because they've got iron in.
There's usually a 'buy two, get one free' offer on them in Boots.

Taking vitamin C is good for a quick perk up, but if you are deficient in something, it can cause a chain reaction as most vits/minerals require a nother alongside it to work. So try to take iron rich foods at the same time as vitamin C to increase absorption of the iron - a glass of OJ with iron fortified cereal, or broccoli alongside meat etc, this could perk you up. Eat more oily fish too if you can as Omega 3 supports brain function and can reduce stress and anxiety.

IMO a really good multivitamin is a good insurance policy, and a good place to start. If you still feel bad after taking a good quality vitamin, perhaps you have a deficiency to be checked out..

I take Solgar multivitamins. Female Multiple when not pregnant, and currently taking the Pre-natal Nutrients for pregnant and lactating women.

I also take Higher Nature's Omega 3 Fish Oils (safe in pregnancy too as they are taken from the body, not the liver of the fish). I really notice a drop in my mood when I am not taking them, being a bit prone to anxiety and low mood as I am. They're really good.

They're expensive brands but I do feel you should pay for the best if you're going to take something, and the ingredients are high quality/purity. E.G. cheaper multivitamins use cheaper sources of ingredients, so in a standard preggie vitamin you get from Boots, you get cheaper forms of iron which can (and did!) make constipation worse, whereas the Solgar one uses a more quality one that doesn't bung you up. Or the vitamin C will be "buffered" to be more gentle on the stomach.

I also get them at discount from online chemists which helps! Sometimes just a course of a good brand like this whilst addressing your diet can be enough.

Hope you feel better soon.

oooh me too lobster.
I take good quality vit and mineral but the thing I really really notice if i stop taking is a good omega/EFA blend even though I eat a lot of fish and seeds etc.
But DS2 has autism and DH, DS1 and DD have eczema and allergies so I think we are prone to being EFA deficient

rookiemater · 23/02/2009 12:10

I take quite a concoction as have recently been diagnosed with Endometriosis.

I can also recommend spatone if you are feeling tired, it never hurts to take a good quality multivitamin.

I also take evening primrose oil and fish oil a probiotic ( I think) additional vit c, and some other things.

But first port of call, multivitamin and spatone.

Oh yes, I am interested in this too.

kiddiz · 23/02/2009 12:28

I take a general multivitamin/mineral and extra magnesium supplement which someone on here reccommended for migraine. I would love to kiss that person as I have gone from struggling on the 6 imigran a month the gp would prescribe and extras bought otc from the chemist to having 4 tablets left this month and I haven't had to buy any supplementary otc imigran since before Christmas.

Rubbish, surely? You're better off eating a varied healthy diet and chucking the vit pills in the bin unless you have been told to take them by a doctor eg iron for low bloods. I take nothing and I'm healthy. My mam takes lots but still complains of everything!!!!
Kiddiz, I'm going to look for the magnesium on the BMJ site - there might be some research into that, maybe its a good one to tell my bil.
