Stuffed up baby having trouble feeding - worried about his breathing

My 11 wk old (8wks prem) is so bunged up he can hardly breathe and is having trouble feeding. I'm starting to get really worried, he sounds like he can hardly breathe and feels like he's got a bit of a temperature.

I've got some Calpol in the cupboard but haven't used it before, but is there anything I can do to help him breathe?

You can get these snot sucker things (personally I can't do it, but people do). They are little devices to literally suck the snot out their noses (heave).

You can get Karvol (ask chemist).

Babies can manage to feed when quite snotty, but they do splutter sometimes with it. Try to wind him well, bad enough being bunged up in the nose.

Bump this up in the day for more ideas.

take him in the bathroom and put the shower on hot and shut the door (prob want to undress LO) and the steam will help clear the nose. Also keep him propped up when asleep. I bought a humidifier when my 13 week old was born as this helped LOADS. Argos sell them...

If he's not feeding enough to stay hydrated, I would take him to the GP, personally...he's still v little (esp being prem).

Is he keeping down what he's drinking? Can you get him to drink some cooled boiled water, if he's not coping with milk?

Humidifiers are great, and steam does help, for bunged noses. I find Olbas junior smells better than Karvol, but its much of a muchness.

That said, my dd2 had RSV bronchiolitis at 4 weeks, and it did look like a cold, bunged up, and difficulty feeding, to start with - if he starts throwing up feeds, struggling to breathe (watch his ribs, check if they suck in or not - and his throat, too) or seems dehydrated, I would take him for a check up asap.

Probably bunged up nose, not trying to scare you, just wanted to mention it in case

Thank you - he's still about the same but managing to feed a bit, although spluttery and for not as long as usual. Will keep an eye on his throat just in case it turns into something more nasty.
