Any partners of male epileptics around? Could I politely ask you about your sex life please?

Have name changed but god knows why since he knows I have been looking into this lately, but still, might at least stop some of our mates knowing all about our sex life.

Anyway, my partner was diagnosed epileptic just before I met him and has been on tegretol ever since (over 8 years now)which very sucessfully controls it. Now, my issue is, we have no sex life. In a nutshell, DP has no sex drive at all...and I mean AT ALL. We last had sex 18 months ago...I have given up. It has been soul destroying. I have posted about that on here a couple of times before, with a namechange no doubt

Now, I recently stumbled across something on the internet that suggests that male epileptics on long term medication, particularly tegretol in fact, have a very high incidence of sexual dysfunction, epecially a lack of libido. Aha! A possible cause for it all! So, 2 questions really, anyone else out there in the same boat as me, and secondly, anyone reviewed the meds as a result and got somewhere with it...? Bit of a long shot I know, Im not expecting an avalanche of replies here...

No personal experience but work in mental health and this is quite a common side effect of a lot of psychiatric mecdication too. Is he under a consultant for his epilespsy? He may be a priority for viagra prescription or other meds.

sorry but it doesn't affect it in all cases.
I don't post about my sex life, but dh is on tegretol(the retard one) and it is all ok iynwim.
I am sure it affects everyone differently though.
I would recomend that he talks to his gp though.

He doesnt need viagra, it really is libido rather than the mechanics that are the issue! He does have a consultant, but I think DP would be very very nervous of rocking the boat at all in terms of changing meds since if he changes and then fits, he cant drive etc and working would be very very difficult (he commutes 2 hours a day atm.) I guess thats why I posted, to see if anyone had gone through such a process sucessfully. Thanks for answering scummy, bizarre these meds have this side effct so commonly.

We have done the doctor msshadow, he offered him viagra...which isnt the issue (would be easier if it was)

Just out of interest tho, how old is your partner and how long has he been on tegretol?

could he be tired, tegretol does make them tired. dh sleeps very soundly!!
If he is having a long day as well..
dh can't drive either.

mshadowsisfab · 21/02/2009 19:32

can't say anymore about dh as he doesn't like me talking about him on here. he has been on it for over 20 yrs. he has been on the same dose for ages. just changed to the slow release ones a couple of years ago as it gives better cover.

BitOfALongShot · 21/02/2009 19:37

Oh yes, we do tired too msshadow! But no, really not due to that alone, believe me we are beyond tired being a reason or explanation. Even a tired person occasionally has an urge. DP never does. Ever.

Hmm. Not related to length of time on it by the sounds of it. But as you say, everyone is different and no doubt respond differently to meds etc
