full blood results back & one isn't 'normal'

Basically I had full blood tests done on Wednesday (as well as a smear) & when I rang yesterday the receptionist read out all the results (cholesterol, liver, iron etc..) and said they were all within normal satisfactory range apart from one, the kidneys.

She asked if I was diabetic, I said I'm not but my father is & my aunt is, it runs heavily in my father's side of the family. My aunt is on dialysis at the minute thanks to her diabetis & is awaiting a kidney transplant.

She said she was unsure what the results were but she would get the nurse to call me.. I waited in all day but she never called me back!! Now I'm left here all weekend worrying about what the result means!

Have any of you ever experienced this? Could it perhaps just be a little glucose or something?

I was relieived the cholesterol was OK as I am following slimming world & eat quite a lot of eggs, now I have this to fret about.

It's probably nothing though, I hope so.

bump

Depends on what the test is....and i have to say that it is VERY innapropriate for the receptionist to be reading out results over the phone AND making some attempt at commenting on them!

Kidney test could mean any number of things and there are a couple of results that she could be referring to so it would be impossible to comment.

It could be as trivial as you bieng a bit dehydrated.

Ring the surgery on Monday and ask to speak to the practice nurse..NOT the receptionist.

I thought that too deanychip, she should just have said the nurse would call me re: results.

I'll call Monday.

Thanks for the bump SB

The "kidneys" she refers too are the urea and electrolytes. The receptionist sounds really vague. and she isn't medically trained. try not to worry frequently there are blips with the results and tests need repeating. I think if it was anything major the gp would hav contacted you.

Anyway if it were me I'd ring dr's monday am and ask for telephone consultation with gp - so they can tell you what if anything is up (or repeat test)

WallOfSilence · 21/02/2009 12:39

Yeah, I wasn't with my GP though.

I have been really dizzy (to the point of passing out) for a few weeks now & I had my BP checked for about a week & it was fine.

The blood tests were the next step.

I've just always seen the practice nurse as the GP is always busy & as I don't need an appointment for the nurse I nip over in my lunch break.

I'll call Monday morning.

.
The woman should lose her jobs, receptionists are NOT allowed to comment on blood results.

There could be lots of reasons why your "kidney" results were elevated. I am rusty and can't remember what the tests are - but urea definately and probably protein. So it could be that you are little dehydrated actually. Could be that you have an infection. Could just be that you are one of these people who fall outside the "normal" range. This woman will have no medical training whatsoever but fancies herself as an armchair medic!

If you had a full blood profile then she would have bloody well able to know you were diabetic without even looking at the kidneys cos they usually do a blood glucose test! Stupid cow.

As has been said already - if there is a problem with results then the doctor rings you. But only if they think its relevent, it might be that your kidney results were on the high side but the doctor probably thought nothing of it.

Your diet could elevate your kidney bloods i think, also your liver ones too - because your body is having to work a bit harder to get its nutrients - thats what happens when you go on a diet thats how you break down the fat!!

I would ring the surgery on monday and complain about this woman - totally out of order - who does she think she is!!!

I seriously doubt there is a problem though - carry on with the diet, its doing you good!

Are you eating a lot of eggs because you are doing slimming world?? Maybe you are eating too much protein. Apparently eggs are now shown not to increase cholesterol btw.

LucyEllensmummy · 21/02/2009 12:46

I bet the dizzyness is due to your diet - are you eating regular carbs? You need to!

I once had a funny reading on one test and I think it was Kidney function. The doctor said it was just because they had left the sample too long. I think that normally it's true to say that no news is good news - therefore if it was something serious then the doctor would have rung.
