couldnt find cervix for coil fit

Hi all. I just want some advice. For Months and months I've been dithering about having a coil fitted to stop REALLY heavy periods. Really didn't like the thought of a coil, but having had various tests done, being told I've got fibroids, anaemia, flooding etc I thought lets go for it.

Went, rather nervously today for the fitting and was going to have a smear done at the same time. IT WAS AWFUL. I started with some minor grimacing, moved onto SSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHUUUUUUUUGGGGGGAAAAARRRRR! Then full blown yowling. The nurse and doc couldnt find my cervix, they knew it was there, lol, but it was pointed backwards and low down. (why do I have to be so bloomin awkward!!) So they couldnt even get the gizmo thingy in the right place to take the smear so doc said she wouldnt be able to fit the coil.

Sorry for the long winded post, its just I had psyched myself up for this as it was gonna be the best thing in the long run (hopefully) and now I have no idea what options are left for me. They spoke about an hormonal implant or going to a family planning centre where they may have more 'luck' at fitting it.

What are the other options though for heavy periods probably caused by fibroids. I'm only 38 and already feel ready for the knackers yard!!

Thanks

An FPC where they fit loads of coils is def the best bet. My old GP surgery wouldn't even try doing them as they said you need to do them really regularly to be good at it - especially the Mirena which is bigger than the copper coil

Ivykaty44 · 20/02/2009 15:40

I had a copper coil fitted some years ago and it was fine for about 3 years then it came out and I went back to the gp and try as they might - they could fit it, a mirena one. Yet the first one had slipped as easy as nine pence. They tryed and in the end we gave up and I had a depro injection instead and this stopped my periods althogher for about a year and I came off the injection altogether. (now have been stz - so have light periods due to that)

So as other post says give the family planning a go and its not you!

Go to the FPC and go at a different time in your cycle - the cervix moves up and down through the month, around ovulation time it is lower.

But you need to be 100% sure you aren't pregnant and probably best to not have sex for 7-10 days prior.

When I was in a gynae day ward a while back there were several women there having mirenas fitted under general anaesthetic so it's obviously not uncommon to have problems having one fitted

I had two Mirena's fitted back to back. They went in absolutely fine (GP at local surgery). No pain at all, and I am an absolute wimp.

However, they couldn't take the last one out. Couldn't see my cervix. Was quite amusing on their last attempt at theGP surgery, 2 practice nurses and a GP all peering intently up my oojamaflopsit.

I had to have it removed under a general in the end.

I've had same problem with every coil I've had , my uterus is inverted whatever that means. I'm on my second Mirena now and this was EXCRUCIATING.
But worth it.Heavy periods cured like magic.
It's definately down to the skill of the doctor. One particular GP at my practice specialises in this.
Don't give up go back to GP and ask to be referred to a specialist coil fitter!

Re the heavy periods - you should get a gynae referral
They can look for fibroids or other causes and prescribe other drugs
