of course it's not normal

it is most probably a urinary tract infection

but you NEED to go to the doctors because they need antibiotics and can get really painful and if untreated can affect your kidneys

Why would you be embarrassed about this though? This is a normal bodily function and a normal thing to happen .. it is a diagnostic tool that the GP will have seen a million and one times.

unless you've been eating loads of beetroot of course, in which case it's just dyed urine

benandalex · 19/02/2009 12:47

If it is from the bowel and there is a lot of blood, please see the doctor asap. Are you constipated? Could it be piles? Sounds like more blood than that though.

eyeeye · 19/02/2009 12:52

good grief woman, seriously you're embarrassed about talking about your anus? Why?

OK putting my aghast attitude at your level of embarrassment aside (sorry) - Rectal bleeding again is very common it could be a hemmorhoid or an anal fissure - do you have any pain?

Look it's the same answer - get yourself to the doctor and tell him / her

BennyAndSwoon · 19/02/2009 12:53

Your doctor will have seen/heard it all before, including the embarrassment that you feel.

Get thee to the GP

littlelamb · 19/02/2009 12:54

My dad (a very sensible man) has always said to me that to a doctor there's no difference between your arse and your elbow It's their job to be able to diagnose problems and make them better. And you can practically guarantee that it won't be the first bum they've seen today. Problems like that are just silly to leave out of embarassment- it could be serious.

eyeeye · 19/02/2009 12:55

There are any number of common causes that your GP will have seen a million and one times. But you need a diagnosis and treatment plan.

You have no doubt had people looking up your vagina during birth / smears. This is no different and has no more cause for embarrassment that anything else.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 19/02/2009 12:55

Yes, get thee to a GP. Ask to see a woman GP if that feels less embarrassing.

Lulumama · 19/02/2009 12:57

it is likely to be piles or a fissure, neither of which should entail a long examination.

it is not normal to bleed when you empty your bowels, but nor is it likely to be anything sinister

please go .. it is likely to be something easily resolveable

benandalex · 19/02/2009 13:01

thanks ill phone them when they have reopned after lunch and see when i can get an appointment i know im silly to be embarresed but i am i hate being poked and prodded anywere and do have reasons behind it. thanks again x

About five years ago I had blood on my stools, which got gradually worse, till in the end the toilet water would just be bright red because of all the blood !
I was examined, and diagnosed with Colitis.

It can be treated with anti inflammatories and in more severe cases with steroids.

It could also be piles or an anal fissure which can be easily treated.
