The one time I don't go to the hospital with DH - they change his medication Grrr

He has regular appointments;I couldn't go today because I had D&V at the weekend & frankly I couldn't manage the journey.

So instead of super-duper fancy antibiotics, he got bog standard Amoxycillin

AND (on top of that) they changed his 100mg doxycyclin for 400 mg of Trimethoprim

So amoxycillin will do nothing & that is a big jump 4 times what he was having before

I am not a happy bunny - If I had been there I would have got an explanation for the changes; now I will have to ring up & try & find someone who knows about the change

Is he unable to explain the changes himself ? Can they divulge information about him to you.

KatyMac · 17/02/2009 18:54

Not really - he won't have asked why; he is like that "authority figure says" DH does

They will - the Nurse Practitioner knows us & talks to us regularly (but is P/T so not always easy to catch) - they have his permission to talk to me on his records

Katymac, to reassure you, you can't compare 100mg of one drug with 400mg of another and say "that is a big jump...". For example, the standard dose of paracetamol would be 1000mg, whereas a standard dose of codeine would be 30mg.

Bog standard amoxycillin might be the best thing right now.

Fancy abs are no good if they don't do the right job.

Last time he had amoxy - he had 10 courses in 11 months - They only started working when they added other stuff to it

Still not sure about the trimethoprim it just seems a lot

IME normal trimethoprim dose is 200mg twice a day.
would get details from practice nurse though.

lou031205 · 17/02/2009 19:15

You are right, disasterarea, I wonder if they are giving a higher dose because it is persistent.

KatyMac · 17/02/2009 19:25

DisasterArea is that a dose to 'fix it' or a preventative dose? Because this is being given as a preventative (2x200mg - with food)

Ah, OK, so the dose is 400mg per DAY, Katymac?

That is a perfectly normal dose for trimethoprim treatment. Having said that, trimethoprim as a prophylaxis (preventative) is normally 100mg at night.

KatyMac · 17/02/2009 19:37

Hmm - mind you he is quite 'broke' so maybe he needs a higher dose

I guess I am cross with myself being too poorly to go with him - it is so far away (100 miles) & I am still so tired

Normally the nurse explains it to me after the Dr prescribes it to him.....

I'm obviously suffering from 'galloping guilt'
