Found a lump - please someone who has been through this reassure me?

I have found a lump in my armpit which has been there ( to my knowledge) about 3 weeks. I wasn't unduly worried as i know these things can come and go but after 3 weeks went to the doctor last night. The doc examined me and decided I needed a referral to a breast specialist .

I am still not that worried as statistically more chance of it being a nothing but, if anyone has gone through this and it has been nothing can you please post to reassure me?>

Thanks

I have had two incidences of breast lumps. The first time I was referred to teh breast clinic for ultrasound and a feel by an expert and was diagnosed with fatty tissue.

The second time, again at teh breast clinic, they did needle aspiration and ultrasound. Results inconclusive so they decided to book me in for surgery to remove the lump. Lump removed and tested adn it came back as fatty tissue.

I have also had various armpit lumps. Some went away within a month. Has it got smaller at all?

I was told by the breast clinic and by a GP that an armpit lump is unlikely to be worrysome unless you also have a malignant breast tumour.

So chances are it is nothing, absolutely nothing to worry about.
But well done for getting it checked (and that was not meant to sound as patronising as it did )

lisalisa · 17/02/2009 10:21

Thanks hippipotami and well done for losing 3 pounds!!!

Didn't sound patronising at all....

Thanks for your reassuring post.

As well as the big breast C I was also concerned as to lymphomas etc. not concerned this is what it will be just that it is a possiblity as i understand these manifest as lumps as lymph system/nodes are affected and infected.

Can i just ask you - was needle aspiration painful?

The 3 pounds has taken 4 weeks to lose - not all that good really!

Needle aspiration did not hurt at all, a little sharp scratch the same as when they take blood, but nothing more than that

Had not considered Lymphoma, but if that was what they were thinking then a breast specialist would be the wrong specialist, no?
Either way, unless the GP has fasttracked you, I am sure it is just one of those things teh body does. It likes to keep us on our toes

I frequently get armpit lumps. Most disappear within 2 weeks, some bigger ones are more persistent. But all eventually go by themselves.
Hopefully that is the case for you aswell.

Hands up here to being a 'lumpy' person.

I panicked the first time.. no just go to get them checked out as I need to.

clinic ultra sounded my breast, and all was fine. didn't have it removed, but do have regular checks.

just want to add.. mine seem to appear much more when I'm stressed. not sure why that is tho.

HTH

I've had a needle aspiration and a biopsy on two lumps about 5 years apart. Mum had breast cancer so was very concerned.

The aspiration was a long time ago, but as I recall it stang a bit, but was no real problem. The biopsy was done after a local anaesthetic (sp) had been injected so I didn't feel anything. It was a little sore afterwards, but nothing major.

Happy to say that both were fine. Fatty tissue in my case too. I've got a lot of that .

IME the staff and facilities at the breast clinics are excellent. Hope all goes well for you.

lisalisa · 17/02/2009 10:31

Thank you again and I have been very stressed - maybe that is why?

I don't think GP is thinking lymphomas , no although that concentrates my mind more as my dad has a rare form of blood cancer. Just think they are referring to breast specialist and in words of GP, if that is nothing then we'll have to decide what we do next as to why the lump is there at all.

I wouldn't worry too much - I've had several breast lumps and was given the glamorous diagnosis of "lumpy breasts"! Doctors always (I think) refer you on, you have to be seen within 2 weeks whatever the sort of lump. I've had 3 biopsies and whilst uncomfortable they were not too painful. It doesn't stop you worrying though, and visits to the clinic are not especially pleasant, I felt a fraud sitting there with other people who were obviously much worse off than me.

I have to have check ups every 6 months, and monitor myself, but the hospital are unconcerned, and have always been kind and helpful.

bringonthetrumpets · 17/02/2009 10:37

i've too had a breast lump (although in a different place). the doc suggested that they do a biopsy and it turned out to be a fibroendenoma. they can vary in size and location in the breast, but they are benign and very common. actually, my best friend from school had one as well and it was near her armpit....

hope that helps to relieve your stress a little. please keep us updated on what your doc thinks!

((((hugs!!))))

BCNS · 17/02/2009 10:37

there was no real explination as to my lumps, not cysts, not dodgey.. had the choice to have removed or to leave. I chose to leave. But I know them inside out and check for anything different myself and they are checked now on a 6 monthly basis. which I'm happy with.

lisalisa · 17/02/2009 14:39

I now have an appointment tonight for ultrasound. Please wish me well......

i have had 2 lumps removed and will be having my third one removed on monday they have all been ok, but it is natural to worry, i wish you speedy tests and results

PrettyCandles · 17/02/2009 15:00

I had an armpit lump that turned out to be an infected - though painless - cyst. Antibiotics cleared it up, but I was told it would have to be removed if it recurred. Hasn't done so.

Hope all is well, LL.

Good luck, will be here thinking of you

pindywopwop · 17/02/2009 17:35

good luck

I have just been to breast clinic for pain in one breast.

All the staff were good and I had a maamogram and am waiting for results.

I was told my breast are 'glandular' in the area that is painful. They feel lumpy but no lumps.

not sure if this helps but you are not alone

smudgethepuppydog · 17/02/2009 19:06

I'm a fatty lump too. I have to confess the first lump scared the crap out of me. My GP was like your GP, unsure of what the lump was so referred me straight away which scared me even more because I was expecting a slap with wet kipper and a "It's nothing to worry about" response from her.

Wishing you well. I too was seen v. v. quickly on the good ol' NHS.

Pinktastic · 17/02/2009 19:41

Hi,

I saw this thread and wanted to reassure you with my experience.

I found a lump in my armpit last summer and kept putting it off until finally DH made me see my GP.

After taking antibiotics for a week to rule out infection, the lump had grown so my GP referred me to the breast clinic.

I was very worried as my mum died of leukaemia when she was 36 (I was 12 at the time) and my brother died of Ewing Sarcoma ( a form of bone cancer) when he was 14.

At the clinic I had a scan followed by a mamogram, another scan and finally a fine needle biopsy. When I went back for the results a week later, I was told that I had a skin cyst and if it started to get any bigger or cause me problems then they would remove it.

I still have it but it doesn't bother me anymore.

HTH x

lisalisa · 17/02/2009 20:56

Thanks everyone.

I have now been told it is a cyst like so many others here - probably caused by shaving!

I am now reassured and worrying no longer. And all your response really helped put it in persepctive.
