Help me. My foot hurts so badly I cannot walk properly

In Jul/Aug I hurt my foot, I dont know how I did it. I struggled to work for a while and went to see a doctor, who said that I should stop hobbling and try to walk properly as limping was making it worse. So I tried, after a while it stopped hurting, but it kept flaring up ever now and again.
The past month it has flared up three times and it is really, really painful. I cant even get up/down the stairs properly at the minute as it hurts me to put weight on my foot.
Different shoes dont help, I've tried little heals, flats and trainers, but not helping!!
Any ideas? Or do I have to go to the docs and be told off for limping again?

Did you have an accident or a fall?

OrmIrian · 16/02/2009 20:36

Don't go the the GP, go to A&E. Get it x-rayed. I broke my foot in the summer - when it was first x-rayed I was told it was just bruised. But then got a letter 2 days later saying there was a small fracture. It can be hard to detect. Very very painful. Hope you get it sorted.

No accident or fall that I can remember.
Its the bit on the inside of my foot, is it the instep?

Really A&E?

i had stress fractures in both my feet a couple of years ago, was intensely painful

get it checked out

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 16/02/2009 20:39

Oh, it is so painful. My pains after my c-section didn't hurt this much (I know, i'm a wimp!!)

No, not A&E.

Are your feet flat? When you stand up without shoes/socks on do your arches fall so your feet are flat on the floor? do you have a full range of movement when you are sitting down? It it painful to move when you are not standing or walking?

Stress fractures don't normally hurt for this legnth of time.

OrmIrian · 16/02/2009 20:42

Yes A&E! Lie if you need to. Tell them you whacked it again and it's much worse. I broke mine stubbing my toe Doesn't have to take much.

MmeLindt · 16/02/2009 20:42

Could it be a heel spur?

I have one that flares up occasionally, particularly after we have done a lot of walking. It often hurts during or after holidays.

The pain is not confined to the heel, mine hurts more in the middle of the foot.

MmeLindt · 16/02/2009 20:44

heel spur

Littlefish · 16/02/2009 20:44

I had very fallen arches - so fallen that I was virtually flat footed. It was so painful to walk on.

I saw a podiatrist and now have orthotic inserts in my shoes. I am now pain free!

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 16/02/2009 20:46

No, not A&E.

Are your feet flat? No

When you stand up without shoes/socks on do your arches fall so your feet are flat on the floor? No, they arch

do you have a full range of movement when you are sitting down? Yes, I can move it. I can bend my toes but it hurts, if I flex my foot, it hurts.

It it painful to move when you are not standing or walking? If I hold my leg up without my foot on anything, it is painful.

No trauma, comes and goes, inside of sole - plantar fasciitis?

bruxeur · 16/02/2009 20:47

Ah, more info - not PF then.

MmeLindt · 16/02/2009 20:47

Just noticed that the page I linked to is selling insoles etc. I am not endorsing them, it was just the first website that came up when I googled heel spur.

I was prescribed insoles from the doc and they help, but the thing that helps most is stretching exercises.

scrooged · 16/02/2009 20:50

It sounds like a ligament/muscle problem rather than a bone problem IYSWIM. As it's painful without you standing on it then this indicates a ligament/muscle, you need pain when standing for it to be bones so an x-ray wouldn't help. It sounds like you need a physio. Pop to your GP for a referral.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 16/02/2009 20:52

bloody foot!!

I will book in to see the doctor. And maybe I'll cover my painful arm at the same time which I cant bend at the moment from slipping on the ice the other day.

I am a walking typing disaster zone!

No, cannot be heel spur or PF if it is sore when not bearing weight.

Sounds like your GP should have sent you to get it looked at in July.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 16/02/2009 20:53

Thanks for all your help and links. I never knew so much stuff could go wrong with feet.

I will look into some insoles though
