'sprained' ankle still not healed after 2 weeks with swelling only on the joint.

I fell heavily on my ankle in the snow in a similar way to a fall a skier would have (was in the snow) with my ankle bent and rolled on.
Had an x-ray on the day which showed no break but couldn't walk and was very swollen. Swelling has gone down after 2 weeks but have a pain like someone is poking the inside of the bone with a pencil when I put full weight on it. Lump and swelling over the joint.
What to do? I have been to the GP twice about it who says do the exercises, which I do and without pain but it swells more.
Would you ask for more x-rays?

perhaps ask whether you could see a physio?
if it actually was a sprain, they are hideously painful, for around 6 weeks.
when i did it 4 years ago the joint regularly siezed up completely, esp in the mornings, and wouldn't take my weight at all. At this stage, I'd be tempted to say that by all means go back and ask more, but they are likely to tell you to rest it, take anti-inflamatory medication and keep it mobile.... if you want a decent counter-argument then tell your GP, as you have here, that you are very concerned that you are unable to weight-bear on it.

The other option - though you really need a proper expert on this (I'm only a PE teacher!) is if you have damaged any of the other tissues in the joint, as well as the ligament - to which the sprain refers.
The subtalar joint is under the true ankle joint and consists of the talus on top and calcaneus on the bottom. The subtalar joint is responsible for the side-to-side motion of the foot. With the direction of movement that you describe, you could easily have over-stretched all of the ligament and muscle tissue relating to this joint.

I don't know the likelihood of you having damaged the cartilage or something, but it is always worth getting checked out. The ankle joint is so complex that it needs real experts like physio to accurately work out what's happening.

Good luck

sounds like you've strained the ligamant. The swelling may take a couple of months to resolve, full range of movement up to 6 months.

Interestingly, article in BMJ last week concluding that plaster cast for 10 days the best way to heal ankle sprains; tube banadages totally ineffective.
