Have you got an excemption certificate?

foxinsocks · 15/02/2009 21:42

I had one taken out but not on the NHS (only because we don't have any NHS dentists grr) so I can't help but will tell you that it cost A LOT less that having it mended!

Lulumama · 15/02/2009 21:43

sometimes if there is a teaching place near you you can have a traineee/student dentist do your procedure for you.

phone NHS direct if you don;t have a dentist

scrooged · 15/02/2009 21:45

www.nhs.uk/Healthcosts/Pages/Dentalcosts.aspx this for details on the certificate

muffle · 15/02/2009 21:45

I had one out, I can't remember now but I do remember I was pleasantly surprised - less than £50 I think.

MissisBoot · 15/02/2009 21:46

here is a list of the three charging bands. It shouldn't cost more than £44.60 to have a tooth removed.

scrooged · 15/02/2009 21:46

www.careline.org.uk/section.asp?catid=21394&docid=382 this for the costs. They are set by the NHS so shouldn't be different where you are IIRC.

thisisyesterday · 15/02/2009 21:47

if you have an abcess they won't do anything until you've had anti-biotics to clear it up.

then they'll be able to tell you whether it needs taking out or can be repaired.
it might jus tneed a filling. which is covered in the £44.60 price band, same as an extraction

dizzymac · 15/02/2009 21:47

It recently cost me around £30 ( no more) I think a little less. He did a good job too!

offerdilemma · 15/02/2009 21:47

I had my wisdom tooth out a couple of years ago and paid.....

wait for it.....

£5!!!!!

muffle · 15/02/2009 21:47

This might help - it suggests it's about £44.

Summerfruit · 15/02/2009 21:50

Thank you ! You are all lovely !!! I'm so scared of going but even more sick about spending too much money ! I had an absess a couple of years ago but I was pregnant but it didnt cost me a thing as I was pregnant. The pain was unbearable, worst than childbirth (and I didnt have any pain relief)..My tooth is ok at the moment but I dont want to wait to make it worst !

well wait and see what they say.. they may be able to mend it ok for you. and your dentist will be able to explain all the charges for any different options available to you

scrooged · 15/02/2009 21:52

It'll be ok. It will be far worse if you leave it. If you claim tax credits you are sent a card for free prescriptions and dental treatment. Just working tax I think, income support too. You can claim the money back if you are entitled to and don't have a card.

muffle · 15/02/2009 21:53

My extraction really was painless - not pleasant, but didn't hurt (and it is worth going through it to get rid of the problem tooth). If you have it out, get some corsdodyl mouthwash and use it - you don't want it to get infected afterwards like mine did which meant lots of pain and antibiotics.

snifflewitch · 15/02/2009 21:55

£43 afaik if you have to pay
free, obv if you have any maternity exemption or if you get WTC you might qualify for free treatment or reduced cost.

Summerfruit · 15/02/2009 21:59

So the first step is to go to see a doctor to have antibiotics ? My tooth is competely broken with just a bit of left so I need to have the root taken off..I'm working and everything but it'sjust that we are in the process of moving so I dont have any spare money...thank you so much

MrsMuddle · 15/02/2009 22:23

I got a price for getting one out last week, and it was only about £12. Couldn't believe how cheap it was.

Summerfruit · 16/02/2009 08:49

Thank you !!! I hope its the same in London ! xxxx

summerfruit, the dentist can prescribe antibiotics if they're needed.
so best to get yourself down there, then they'll be able to assess exactly what needs doing.

if it's an nhs dentist the max you will pay for a filling/extraction is £44.60

if you have a private dentist it could be more
