big molar, all that's left is one side and a big filling in the middle. does anyone know if they will still be able to crown it?

I recently lost a quarter of my molar. Obviously not as big a bit as yours, but still a sizeable chunk. This also left a big filling in the middle.

The dentist put a white filling in, as a new corner, but did say that it may not last more than a couple of years due to where it had broken. He then said that it would need a gold tooth if it went again, and that I had better get saving!! Because the middle bit of the tooth is only filling, then it would be a gold filling/inlay next time but not a crown.

Dunno, depends how much is gone I suppose, but that happened to me last year (I think about a third of the tooth went, and very similar to you, had a big filling left in there) and the dentist did a composite (?) filling on the top of it which has been fine.

Don't know if they'll be able to crown it but will be interested to find out as this happened to me too.

First the filling fell out leaving very deep hole. Couldn't get appt with dentist and had to wait for my next check up which was over 6 months away.
He refilled the tooth and the following week the whole inner half of my bloody tooth cracked off.
Again I was unable to get appt as it's not classed as emergency so am having to wait until my next check up (still a few months away).
The dentist is so busy that there will have been a gap of over a year between check ups even though we book the next appt at the current appt (if you see what I mean).

Sorry. That was a bit long wasn't it

oh ogg, i hope my filling doesn't fall out today! it's holding the side of my remaining tooth up!

Mine is the same... the replacement filling is obviously all that's holding the outer half of my tooth in

Where did the tooth break off? Mine is level with the gum but there is a sharp edge which catches my tongue [ouch].

With any luck another crown will sort it out - if I would suggest thinking about getting an implant

southeastastra · 15/02/2009 14:08

same as you ogg really low and i keep cutting my tongue on it eating isn't fun

an implant costs thousands doesn't it

Implant might be better value over your lifetime than a new crown/ root filling every 10 years or so? Around £1k - £2k I think though.

Recently had a gold-inlay for similar problem. Fortunately still on NHS exemption period, thank god. I checked with dentist and it would have been around £200, dear but so not as expensive as an implant.
