How much pain is normal after a coil fitting?

I had a mirena coil put in before christmas - was no problem whatsoever. I didnt even realise she had put it in lol. A bit of pain afterwards and some spotting but generally a really positive experience.

Unfortunately it fell out after two weeks lol. It was also giving me the start of bad side effects - I am extremely hormone sensitive.

So I rebooked and had a copper coil put in. Unfortunately I let the newly trained doctor put it in as had been so easier before and I have had two babies naturally. Without going into too much detail - both not to put anyone off (was individual doctor I think) and as Im actually still quite shaken up - the fitting was a nightmare. Took forever, she was clumsy and I had a bad reaction - was white, low blood pressure, shaking, crying the works.

Today I am bleeding quite heavily - heavier than a normal period I would say with small clots and have had bad backache, periods pains and odd shooting pains in my lower stomach despite taking ibuprofen and paracetemol. I look as white as a sheet today. My stomach is also very bloated.

Do you think this is cause for concern (if it doesnt get better I will go see someone) or is this normal for a coil fitting? Is a copper coil more difficult to fit than a mirena? Was I just lucky the first time - the first time DD was only 10 weeks old - she was 22 weeks this time.

thanks
xxxx

Well my doc told me that they were both the same to fit, but initial cramps could be worse with copper.
It fell out? How did this happen? Were you jumping up and down a lot.
That is rotten re fitting.

I had a coil fitted (briefly!) a few years ago, the fitting was v painful, I felt faint and had to lie down for half an hour afterwards and in the evening I was cramped up so badly I drove myself to hospital at 3 am. I went back to the clinic the next day and they said that during fitting they had 'introduced an infection'. Maybe this has happened to you? Mine cleared up quickly enough on a course of antibiotics (put me off coils for life though lol).

agree maybe an infection. Also due to the lack of experience of the "fitter". I attempted to have oe out in and I had the trainee - the pain was excruciating - like I was in labour. After about 40 minutes they gave up

Went back 4 weeks later and a very experienced doctor slipped it in in about 10 mins.

I would phone the clinic where you had it done and talk it over with them - sounds grim

You need to see a doc ASAP. Infections can get in during a fitting. I've had one before and once I'd been treated with anti-bs, I was fine. It is important to have an EXPERIENCED doc to fit a coil!

Yes lesson definitely learnt - dont let just anyone put one in. Was a nightmare - she used wrong speculum size and ended up using three before she was happy! Had to clamp my cervix three times as once it slipped off, another time she did it in the wrong place...she kept knocking the speculum and clamp bit accidentally and it took at least 30 minutes rather than the 5 the other one took. Actually putting the coil in she did ok

Clara - yeah I repeatedly jumped up and down . The jokes I had to endure after that falling out after just having a large baby lol.

Introduced an infection - sorry very serious but so comically put. "hello my infection this is my cervix, how do you do". Am thinking.

I will see how it goes tomorrow - is not so much cramps like labour but a constant ache with odd sharp pains.

The joys of being female!
