I couldn't have my IV X-ray today because I might be allergic to it

So I had to go away & come back later for a CAT (CT?) scan

o it will be a week before the DR gets my results (probably the same as the X-ray anyway)

But it was a bit of a performance what with all the dressing/undressing etc

Who knows the scan may give them more info than the X-ray would have

But it was all quite stress full

katymac, I had an x-ray first then had the one where they inject the dye, and after that I was referred to London for a CT scan.

they can see a lot more, on my x-ray, it showed I had a stone, 18mm x 23mm, local hospital wanted to remove my kidney

Ct scan showed that the stone could be removed by surgery, whcih they then did, but had to go back and have further surgery three times.

i have CT scans every year now to monitor my kidneys.

if you want to chat, you know my number and email

Have you had an ultrasound? They use dye in a CT scan by the way, it would allow them to see more kidney structures then an X-ray, it sounds like they are checking it's working OK (or trying to).

An 18 by 23 stone is HUGE!!! I'm not surprised they wanted to remove your kidney!

KatyMac · 11/02/2009 21:12

No dye - that was what I might be allergic to so no Xray

I was kept hanging around for ages

I really don't think I have a kidney roblem - I haven't had any much pain since I stopped the antibiotics & I think it was either very bad IBS or a kidney infection which the ABs cleared up

I definably haven't got a kidney stone that big.....I know this

Thanks for the offer Alibubbles - I will see how it goes atm I'm floating down that river in Egypt

I had a stone over the weekend. It was titchy, only 4mm but hurt like hell. The pain went away and is slightly back at the moment. Any infection can damage the kidney and they don't repair themselves so it's best that they have been checked. You can feel the stone move down the uriter (sp?), it's painful and can take between 4-8 hours!

KatyMac · 11/02/2009 21:24

Urethra? or a different bit?

That is where my U bend is - so nothing will go down mine........

I have only had the back pain (waist band about 2 inches out from my spine) for about 10-12 days, plus urgency & a feeling of being very full even after I wee.

Would I drink more with a stone?

Sorry I meant to say "poor you, I hope you don't have another one"

It was in the part where the urethra and the kidney meet on Friday. I'm not sure where it is now.

You wouldn't want to drink more with a stone, the pain would move from the renal area to your groin. I kept drinking but not weeing much for some odd reason. It's kind of a bit twingy at the moment. Nice!

KatyMac · 11/02/2009 21:34

Over the last 3/4 months I have doubled what I drink. I now wake in the night to get a drink.

I have little or no pain in my groin

Umm isn't drinking & not weeing dangerous?

That's what I thought. I went to see the out of hours and she said I was just dehydrated. It was better when I went to see my GP on Monday about it. He said he didn't think it was a stone as there was no blood in my urine. I asked someone from work to look at the x-ray taken on Friday and there it was! Doh!

KatyMac · 11/02/2009 21:52

I wonder what more drinking is a sign of (apart from alcoholism)?

OP posts:

There are lots of things (hyperthyroidism, diabetes, lupus, dehydration.....)

KatyMac · 11/02/2009 22:13

hmm, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing

I posted this in the staff room - I though you ladies would laugh too
Funny sad tale about yesterday at the hospital

Went in to CT scan room Nurse/radiographer? said pull your trousers down round your knees & lie facedown on the bed.

I majorly struggle to do this, she then grabs my jeans & pulls them further down

They do the scan

She comes in apologizes, helps me up (very carefully) - am I OK?, 'I hadn't read your notes when you arrived'

OK so what is in my notes ?

how rude, did the radiographer not offer you a gown at least? we get our patients changed before bringing them in the room, saves everyones blushes.
i have seen some people have anaphylactic reactions and its not a pretty site so good job if there was a bit of doubt they didnt go ahead.
we normally always do the IVU first as it's less radiation dose that a ct scan, but they ct scan can pick up the tinyest of stones that we wont see on the ivu images

KatyMac · 12/02/2009 13:08

TBH - I think she just thought 'kidney stones'

But once she realised (saw?) my bad back her attitude changed - climbing down onto the table was quite tricky for my tbh, my back is a bit of a mess
