I have posted last week - I have enlarged spleen and GP called today as my blood tests have caused concern. I have a very raised c.... not sure what she said (anyone any idea?) which goes up with infection to the point the GP thought I might be ill. Any idea what this was (it is not ESR) and what sort of things raised this particualr item in the test. Thanks very much

I think you need to call your GP tomorrow and get her go through it again. she should be more than happy to do it.

Maybe CRP? (C-Reactive Protein) which is increased with inflammation/infection.

Other C could be Creatinine - normally linked to kidney function though.

This is cut from Wikipedia:
"CRP rises up to 50,000-fold in acute inflammation, such as infection. It rises above normal limits within 6 hours, and peaks at 48 hours. Its half-life is constant, and therefore its level is mainly determined by the rate of production (and hence the severity of the precipitating cause)".

It is the CRP - thanks. It was very high - so the GP called to see if was alright. Is it increased with general infection as well as all the other horrible things an enlarged spleen could mean (leukemia, lymphoma etc)? I am going to see another GP tomorrow and believe I am being refered to a blood specialist who I should see within weeks - I am worried sick that I have something really bad and they are obviously also concerned to make the referral. Anyone know how that specialist works out if it is something serious?

Also would the specialist who deals with a spleen be a blood specilaist or is there another type of specialist for that do you think?

Thanks

Did you get on alright today?

Sorry I didn't get back online last night - although I am not a medic (just work with loads of them) so only limited knowledge here!

Hope you have been reassured.
