as a pre-amble, when I need to wee, i go straight to the toilet and wee. If it's bedtime I tell my bladder i need to wee (even if i dont feel the urge) and hey presto, i wee. I can also hold my wee for quite a long time.

DH on the other hand mystifies me. He cannot hold himself, if he needs to go, he has to go immediately (it takes over all other rational thought) and although on those occasions he can wee with no hesitation, at nighttime, or other times when his bladder is not full, it takes him AGES to do a wee. literally 2-3 minutes before anything comes out.

we have always laughed about this, but now i'm beginning to wonder - is this a problem? it has gone on for a good few years iirc (i don't monitor, honestly!) but either i notice it more now (we have now got an ensuite) or its getting worse...

can anyone advise? DH will not go to the doctor to discuss it as he doesnt believe it to be a problem.

My husband is always rushing to the loo,he has alays been like that apparently has one deformed kidney and they are close to his spine or something like that. He does have an enlarged prostrate has a PSA test every 6 months and sees his consultant as well. As his brother died of prostrate cancer consultant keeps a close eye on him. Cancer is in the family mother and cousin died of breast cancer and grandmother stomach cancer apparently in same group of cancers. The finger test only takes minutes and could be a life saver.

Just a note on the PSA test.

It is not wholly reliable. I know a lot of men think that if they have the PSA they can go without the 'finger test' but PSA is really only an indicator test. The two have to be done together.

PSA tests can give 'false positives' - in other words shows you have cancer when you do not.

PSA tests can give 'false negatives'- in other words shows you do not have cancer when you do.

Of course ALL men should take prostate issues seriously and take a lot of advice. Mumsnet is not the place for medical advice but if any women on here read this and can push and persuade their reluctant man to go and talk to the doctor and even go with him if you have to. It is a true act of love.

Here is what a good US website says about PSA tests:

this could be my dh - he is totally hopeless in the bladder department. He doesn't seem to allow his bladder to become full and therefore pees about every 2-3 hours. I perceive this as completely abnormal - I can go for hours then pee like a horse .
I have suggested he tries some bladder training exercises - this is quite good
this page
However he just rolls his eyes and carries on with the trickle! If we are going out en famille the girls and I will think about it and try for a wee if necessary (they are 6 and 4) he will press his bladder and squeeze one out!
He has stopped peeing at night having given up caff coffee and has his last drink before 10pm - he's worse than my dad and his 90
