Is Slapped Cheek what used to be called Scarlet Fever?

dd2 has this at the mo. She is a bit under the weather but basically ok (no nursery till the rash can gone though).

Was just idly wondering if it the same thing as Scarlet Fever, cos you don't hear of kids getting this like they used to when I was little and my mil had never heard of Slapped Cheek.

TIA

no, scarlet fever is generally a rash all over the body

slapped cheek is like a bad cold with burning cheeks

its a different virus

No slapped cheek is fifth's disease. Not the same at all. Scarlet fever is much worse.

Now that makies sense cos I thought scarlet fever was pretty serious (and this clearly is not (unless pg)).

slapped cheek is parvovirus

scarlet fever is a strep infection

Just had that here too, although everything I read said that once the rash shows at all, they are no longer infectious so no reason to keep off nursery/playgroup etc unless they feel ill. I sent dd2 in a couple of days because she seemed pretty bright, kept her off the days she wasn't feeling well.

Hope she gets better soon, we are definately past the worst here and (snow closures apart) she'll be back tomorrow although the rash hasn't gone fully. It can take up to 3 weeks according to, I think, the NHS information online.

Slapped cheek went around DD's school last Summer. It went like wildfire actually because the only symptom was red rash on cheeks and slight temperature. However, it was easily mistaken for sunburn and so children were in school with it and some children were sent home when there was nothing wrong with them ( lots of cross parents!!)

DD was out of sorts for about 2 days and the rash lasted for about 2 weeks in total although she only had 2 days off school.

no slapped cheek is Fifth Disease caused by human parvovirus, Scarlet Fever/Scarletina is related to Strep throat which is a bacterial infection
