Collecting urine sample from baby

Dd (two months old) going to hospital for a clinic next week, and the letter says "Bring a sample of urine". I've read that you can tape a special plastic bag to the baby but the thought of walking into my local Boots and saying "Hello do you have the special bags for collecting baby wee?"...

Anyone got any tips or shall I just hold her over a bowl and hope she wees before my arms drop off? Or maybe the special plastic bags do exist and no-one at Boots will laugh at me. The world of babies is full of wonders I'd never dreamt of before.

We had a similar situation to Irish bird where the hosp. insisted on a 'clean catch' - wee straight into the pot, (which then took my daughter an agonizing 6 hours) so it might be worth checking their policy re: bags or clean catch only.
Good luck!

I had to use a tiny bag with DD1, it was attached by sticky tape, took ages to get one tho, with Dd2 I had to sit with her over a tub for ages.

I'd definitely check with the hospital about the sample and how/when to (try to!) obtain.

I went through a good selection of the suggestions here with DD1 as a baby, eventual success! Only to be told by the hospital on arrival that they only accepted 'fresh' samples anyway, so popped a bag on her (which took yonks to work, which was contaminated, which meant another bag, which was totally frustrating for all concerned!)

Getting philosophical here - when I was expecting her, my worries were about what sort of a world she was going to live in, how would I handle it when she took drugs/got involved with the wrong man, etc. No-one tells you that you actually end up with your entire being focussing on the state of her bowels and bladder. I no longer care how many "s"s there are in "focussing" either - time was when I would have checked the spelling so that other posters didn't think I was iggy. SoupDragon, I'm looking forward to your thoughts on this, but be gentle - I had my gallbladder out last week and laughing hurts.

I used to manage people, I used to write financial reports for a large insurance company. Now I'm offering advice on how to collect urine from a baby. No one ever mentioned this to me in antenatal classes, I can assure you. My, how I remember fondly the amusement we got from the DSs bodily functions when they were babies. Kind of lost something during potty training though.

Maybe sit her on a funnel with the collection pot underneath? Drill a hole in a potty and put the collection pot underneth the hole?

o tempora o mores (feels very smug with self for having got Latin into thread, brain definitely not shrinking after all, now to remember what dh is called)

I think I'm urined out. Let's start a new thread - how to spell focussing maybe? Is there a trashy reading club on MN yet? I only read books with murders in at the moment.

Have you tried putting a clean hanky in her nappy and then wringing the urine into a suitable pot? Just a thought, it worked for me!

lou33 · 07/04/2005 12:25

gp should have the sterile pads that you put in nappies, then syringe it out and into a container

posyhairdresser · 07/04/2005 12:29

Your GP will give you one of these collection devices if you ask!

we were told to use cotton balls for dd2 when she needed a sample, and then a nurse sryinged some urine from them - she was 11 weeks old

sestius · 07/04/2005 18:49

The cotton balls sound the goods - thanks hana, I'll give that a try

hana · 07/04/2005 19:04

sestius - you musn't touch the balls yourself - drop them from the package onto the nappy - likewise when your baby has peed on them - bring the nappy to the nurse full (hopefully they haven't had a poo as well - contamination etc) good luck! I feed dd and thewe waited about 30 min , did the trick ( we were at the hospital)

mears · 07/04/2005 19:42

sestius - chances are that although the appointment card just has printed on it 'bring a urine sample' , it actually is not needed. I would phone first to make sure before you go to the hassle of collecting urine from a 2 months old.

mears · 08/04/2005 11:02

sestius - have you seen my post. I think it may not be necessry to provise a urine specimen at all for your clinic visit.

mears · 10/04/2005 17:38

bump

popsycal · 10/04/2005 17:40

we were given a syringe thing and had to stick a sanitary towel type thing in nappy and syringe out the wee

sestius · 12/04/2005 08:47

sorry mears busy weekend - they did want a sample and in the end it was a piece of - very easy, I mean. DD very obligingly produced sample just as a bowl was in firing range.
Doctors duly admired DD's gunky tummy button and pronounced it not a problem. All's well, onto the next non-crisis hooray!
