Bright Blood in Bowels - TMI alert!

jofeb04 · 30/01/2009 18:25

Hiya all,
I noticed bright red blood from my bowels this morning (was none last night) and thought nothing of it. Noticed it again this pm, tried to google it, and now thinking what could cause it.

Bit of information, I had piles for a number of years, and only recently thought they had gone (used to have blood on paper, hence knowing).

Is this anything to worry about? It is a little painful to sit down so perhaps it may be internal piles. Not trying to think of anything worse at the moment! Do I need to see a doctor or not bother?

Thanks

go and see a doctor straight away

thirtysomething · 30/01/2009 18:27

you def need to see a GP - as you say could be piles as you have this history but always better to err on cautious side!!

jofeb04 · 30/01/2009 18:28

I was thinking that if it was anything more serious that it would not just start to bleed one morning iyswim.

Could be piles, could be something else, but get it checked out either way. Bleeding can be an early symptom of other things.

jofeb04 · 30/01/2009 18:30

I also have IBS (diagnosed three years ago after all other tests were negative) and thought it was also to do with that!

Probably the internal pile thing, but why would something else "not just start to bleed one morning"????????

Get thee to a doctor!

Ring NHS direct now.

nickschick · 30/01/2009 18:31

Well all bleeding has to start somewhere doesnt it?

You need to just get it clered from the doc I too think its to do with piles but drs train for a long time and its best to err on the side of caution isnt it?

girlandboy · 30/01/2009 18:32

I've had IBS for 20 years, but never had bleeding. I don't think bleeding is connected with IBS.

JollyPirate · 30/01/2009 18:36

You need to check with your GP. It sounds like piles to me - especially if you've had them for a number of years.

Just ask your GP to check and confirm piles (which I had to do a few months ago).

jofeb04 · 30/01/2009 18:37

Girlandboy,
I meant in terms that the constipation I suffer with and the constant piles as apposed to anything directly connected to IBS itself.

Waiting for NHS Direct to phone back as don't particually want to go to out of hours tonight (both the children asleep)

Thanks Jollypirate,

Am also thinking of piles, so hopefully will get it checked again.

This sounds like piles. Bright red blood from the bowels, although it looks alarming, is not actually that big a deal. Have you been constipated lately? That might have hurt your piles.

Worth seeing your GP, but no rush.

jofeb04 · 30/01/2009 18:41

Thank you NQC,

I've had fissures before (after having my dd), and that is what it reminds me of. I've been passing my bowels a lot recently (have had symptoms of IBS from stress over an exam) and that has always previously irritated the piles.

NotQuiteCockney · 30/01/2009 18:45

Yeah, I'd be willing to believe it was just that - personally, I probably wouldn't even bother going to the GP, but I'm lazy like that. If it was lots of blood, or carried out, without stopping, for a few days, I might go. But realistically, you ought to treat the piles, there are creams you insert for internal piles, from what I know.

jofeb04 · 30/01/2009 18:48

, but at least it would stop.

How do you get rid of piles forever? Or, is it something that is always there...just waiting for their chance to cause havoc

Go to see your GP next week and get it checked. Better safe than sorry. I have had my rectum removed due to a large cancerous tumour and have not yet finished two years of ops and treatment. You don't want that, do you?

wannabe10 · 31/01/2009 20:17

I have crohns and pass blood on a regular basis.
Am on the loo up to thiry times a day! Even have my own loo at work

jofeb04 · 31/01/2009 20:42

Saw the doctor this morning in out-of-hours, and she thinks it is either piles or fissures.
Been given anasol (sp?!) and Lacsalose (again, sp!).

Haven't used either yet....to scared

OP posts:
wannabe10 · 31/01/2009 20:51

I use anasol as get fissures and its good stuff........
Go for it!

girlandboy · 31/01/2009 21:42

Anusol will shrink the piles quite quickly, and the Lactulose is a stool softener. Lactulose is very gentle; my dd had is prescribed for her when she was 4 months old. You'll be fine!

pania · 31/01/2009 21:49

Oh ThingOne

jofeb04 · 01/02/2009 09:11

lol.

OneThing, it was your post which made me see the doctor yesterday.

Might be brave later on!

OP posts:
BlaDeBla · 01/02/2009 11:25

I've had piles injected, which seems to have worked a bit, although it usually takes more than one go at it!

You MUST NOT ignore blood coming out of your bum. I have colitis and it's pretty terrifying how much blood I loose from time to time. Colitis is the same kind of thing as Crohns but a different part of the gut.

I hope you are better soon.

ThingOne · 01/02/2009 16:16

Don't worry abut me. I should be fine, and not much more treatment to go. I was just trying to make jofeb04 take it seriously! I did keep going, btw, until they found out what was wrong. It's very rare in women under fifty but I don't say that until you've actually been to the GP .
