Gallstones?! Pain / cramp in lower right abdomen and now blood results for elevated bilibruin!

Hi

For about two weeks I have been having pain/cramp that moves about my lower right adbomen eventually in to my right groin. Two lots of blood tests have show that my bilirubin count is evlevated - to the extent that I know have a touch of jaundice, everything else is fine.

My Dr thinks it might be gallstones, but says that I don't really have the classics symptons, so she had booked me in for an ultrascan.

I had my 2nd c-section about 8 months ago and I am wondering if they could be related - or if any one else has had gallstones/ gallbladder / liver problems?

I am making myself sick with worry!!!!!!!

I assume you aren't pregnant? Well it could be that you have a liver infection - have you had a recent bout of flu or sickness? It's unlikely to be related to the cs. Gallstones can present in many ways. Does it get better if you avoid fat in your diet?

No, not pregnant.

I haven't been unwell at all until this started, its almost like severe cramp that moves around. There is absolutely no pattern to it at all, and no foods seem to make it better or worse.

To be honest the pain over the last few days hasn't been nearly so bad that I started to think it was all muscular Ior in my head!) , however with the bilirubin coming back as elevated I started to panic again thinking I have a suspect liver!

Worms?

Sounds like you probably do have some sort of infection, or it could be something like an ovarian cyst, they can hurt in funny places. An appendix on it's way out can throw up some interesting pains too but wouldn't generally affect your bilirubin levels. You are just going to have to wait for the scan my dear - why don't you call them and offer to take any cancellations - you'll get in much quicker!

Defintely don't think its worms.

I am such a worrier and rather than think it is some mild infection I am thinking that it is going to kill me as it will be a massive bloody tumour - god I really do not know what has happened to me, never use to be this negative - I spend half my life thinking I have a terrible illness then when I do get something I think 'that's it' this will kill me.

How off my rocker do I sound?!??

It does sound like gallstones. High billirubin is often caused by a stone blocking the duct/inflammation in the duct, which causes a build up in the blood.
They can put a small stent in the duct to release the bile, it doesn't take long.

Up until this monrig I thought it probably was gallstones but then my doctor said that I didn't have the 'classic' symptons i.e sporadic acute pain, shoulder pain , clay stools or sickness.

As I say, the pain really isn't so bad now - so is it possible the stone could have worked its way through me and my bilirubin count will eventully normailse?

Because being the way I am (mad)- I keep thinking if its not a stone it must be a tumour!

could just be billiary colic rather then stones.

Tula2 · 31/01/2009 08:51

What exactly is that - and should I be even more worried?

Biliary colic is pain caused by the gallbladder trying to squeeze a stone through a duct - either the cystic duct or the common bile duct.

The high bilirubin could be something called Gilbert syndrome, which is a non-specifically elevated bilirubin - can be caused by another disease process, some people just have it all the time, but is worsened by being poorly.

The ultrasound will almost certainly give the diagnosis, and stones sound likely.
