I am not sure, but will probably be going through the same as you soon.

I have a coil fitted and it is due to be removed in March. Not sure which is the easiest to live with - horrible periods or really bad mood swings...

I believe it is changes in the hormone levels, but it is rubbish isn't it. Have you seen your GP I have a Mirena coil now which seems to be improving matters, but before that I was prescribed tranexemic acid which did reduce the bleeding.

I'm 44 and after having a few months of horrible periods and symptoms I started taking Agnus Cactus and the results have been amazing. I was bleeding every 8 to 12 days and felt dreadful. This month I have had my usual 28 day cycle and no symptoms at all, not even PMT!!

Agnus Cactus is a natural hormone regulator. The advice is to take for 12 weeks to experience the full benefit which is approximately how long I have now been taking them however, I did notice a slight improvement after only 2 weeks.

I had same problem but put it down to having children (last baby at 39). The heavy bleeding was becoming ridiculous.I also had a coil which can exacerbate symptoms.

Changing to a Mirena coil sorted it out.

You will find lots of threads on this and it does have disadvantages but the benefits to me outweighed them.

oh, don't fancy a coil

its the headache which kills me, agony

Well, I'm now 43 and haven't noticed any difference yet! It's only a matter of time, though.

Could you be menopausal?

quaranta · 29/01/2009 21:58

Hi, this is an interesting thread and I hope my question is till relevant... My periods too have got worse and worse since hitting 39 - symptoms increasing etc..

I had the coil ( copper) for about 7 mnth and got severe anaemia because i bled so much and had agonising pains - now I am considering the Mirena because feel too old for the pill and might ( just might) want to go for a third child. ( Just turned 40) - any thoughts on why any of you think Mirena might help? Thanks

janmoomoo · 29/01/2009 22:07

Me too, so bad I thought I was going to faint in a meeting. Gone back on the pill and will be staying put on it now - am 40 and GP tried to persuade me to change but not going back to that pain and agony every month and not messing about any more. This is it until menopause or death, whichever comes first!

quaranta · 29/01/2009 22:10

Why is there nothing straightforward about contraception. It really annoys me that everything has drawbacks. And not insignificant ones. Good luck janmoomoo - I too may yet start pill again.

has anyone got a solution for the migraines? tablets don't work.....

Quaranta, the Mirena coil has progesterone in it that thins the womb lining, thus making periods lighter. I have seen a dramatic improvement since September when I had mine fitted but others on here have had problems with it, I think it is an individual thing.

Mumwhensdinnerready · 30/01/2009 16:14

Agree with a lot of the above. Why do all the solutions create other problems?
I would have chosen the pill to control bleeding but that gave me migraine.
Mirena virtually stopped all bleeding for me but does not reduce PMS. It was also more unpleasant to fit than a normal coil.

TheFirstLiffey · 30/01/2009 16:17

I'm 38 in May and my cycle has gone from being really regular for the last 26 yrs to being literally guess the date. It's so annoying. I think that is an age thing too.

Also, I've been getting a lot of pms headaches lately which I never used to get.

Do these little changes mean you are perimeno!?
