I'm having trouble getting the antibiotics down ds2 (nearly 14 months) I have tried putting them in juice, using a spoon, using a syringe, making him laugh and putting it in that way. Everytime, he either refuses or spits it out....I really need to get them down him. the doc said not to put them in milk as it gets broken down and wont work?? TIA

Oh my heavens I swore that I would never tell another living soul what we resorted to in order to get DS1 to take his daily low-dose of anti-biotics but this seems like a worthy cause. This post has been appropriately placed on the front page at the same time as the Coke Thread upon which I also avoided posting. I am about to sink to the depths of Un-earth-motherhood in order to help a fellow mother. Forgive me.
Our sweet, innocent ds1 (then 10 months) refused to take his medication (or anything else orally beyond breast milk actually) and I was a desperate woman. DH was an MSc student in London at the time and our budget was rather limited so the only 'treat' we allowed ourselves was the occasional can of Coke. Our son thought that the shiny red can contained the nectar of the Gods because we rationned them rather strictly. One of his first words was Coke and he would point to crushed cans on the road and shout, "Look Coke". He had never tasted the dark sticky substance within but he was often begging for some. It occured to me that he might drink his medication from the top of the can so that he could be just like his dad. I carefully washed the can and then drew up 5ml of the sweet, yellow medication that he needed to take but would not allow past his lips and squeezed the dropper-full onto the un-opened can. I handed it to him and he slurped up every last ml. I repeated the process 3 times a day for nearly 10 weeks. Oh the shame...

I am quite strict about meds too. Lean toddler's head back whilst in the high chair, stick clean finger between back guns/teeth, squirt syringe gently down side of back of throat, follow up with small beaker full of chocolate milk to take the taste away!

Agree that some of the grittier antibiotics go down ok in a small pot of fromage frais.

Ermm my 14 month old had to have anti biotics recently too. She wouldn't take to start with but then got used to them and opened mouth ready.

....but before that happened - headlock and arms pinned down I'm afraid. Its easier with two adults but do-able with one.

Just gets it over with quickly.

I'm with all those who are prepared to do the death-grip forcing syringe manouevre when all else fails. Felt a bit squeamish about this until a friend of mine told me that without his medication her son would die, so she resorted to any method necessary when her son was at the non-cooperative, non-bribable stage.
Without another pair of hands, the total body wrap, syringe squirt & nose hold works very well!!!!!

With my 3 year old the only thing that worked with Amoxycyllin was putting it in lemonade. He's never been allowed fizzy drinks so it was a 'treat' and the lemony flavour meant he coudn't tell there was Amoxycyllin in it. (He spotted it straight away in any kind of juice). I have also found the syringe method ok but more difficult with 3 year old who is quite strong - have to get it right down the back of his throat but not so much that it makes him gag so it takes 2 or 3 goes.

did they turn up?
