"Oily fish such as salmon, herring, sardines, pilchards, mackerel and fresh tuna are the richest source. A healthy diet should include a serving of oily fish, once a week. Vegetable oils such as rape and soya provide alpha-linolenic acid, an ingredient essential for the body to make its own omega 3's."

Also flaxseed apparently. That seems to be it though.

I think nuts and seeds contain them. Probably avocados. Celebs - eg the minor ones on Celebrity Big Brother (!) - are supposed to get them from Udo's Oil, which I've been known to buy cos it's yummy, but v expensive and must be kept in the fridge. There are lots of other oils like it in supermarkets now, eg Clearspring do one.

I use rapeseed oil all the time - Sainsburys "vegetable oil" with yellow flowers on the label is 100% rape (in small print on the back). As well as the omega 3 it's very high in mono-unsaturates (I think), like olive oil. Doesn't taste of anything but fine for cooking.

Oh! Just found omega 3 is also in walnuts - there you go!

"Some omega 3 fatty acids are found in certain vegetable oils, such as linseed, flaxseed, walnut and rapeseed, but they aren't the same type of fatty acids found in fish.

The omega 3 fatty acids in fish have been shown to help protect against coronary heart disease.

But recent evidence suggests that the type of fatty acids found in vegetable sources may not have the same benefits as those in fish." (from food standards agency website)

Thank you very much for all your replies.

I didn't know quite a few of the facts on here. Most useful!

Cheers!
