Abnormal blood tests

DD went back on the pill so had to have blood tests. She is now in a state because they have come back abnormal. I have told her that can happen for a number of reasons but she is terrified. Anyone have any explanations so I can calm her down.

Abnormal simply means they don't fall within normal ranges for the test result. Can be entirely normal for her. I have an abnormal heartbeat, it's slower than most people's but I'm still here kicking around.

What specifically were the tests for?

I think they were just checking her over as she wanted to back on the pill. I think she said something about Oestrogen levels or something like that. I had difficulty hearing her.

deste - I don;t think I've ever had a "normal" blood test, and I've had literally dozens! I've had low iron levels, low folate levels, high white blood cell counts, abnormal liver enzymes....

All of them have turned out to be from relatively benign causes and/or easily treatable. I'm sure your DD will get a reassuring explanation from the doctor. Can she speak to the doctor now to set her mind at rest?

in whay way anbormal - which ones, how high etc?

very very common to have abnonral tests - if you do the normal sets of bloods (called U+Es, FBC LFTs) then in a NORMAL person the chances are that one or two results will be outside the normal range - and therefore apparently abnormal. normal range though just means that 95% of normal peoples results will be in that range, so 5 % of NORMAL peoples results will be called abnormal by that system. but doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them - just their own reference range is a bit different. i haven't explained that very well - would do it much better face to face without a toddler on my knee!
but depends on which tests and how high they are.
the most common reason is that they are either a) normal for her or b) slightly abnromal but nothing serious - eg if she had a slight virus at the time or something

but need to discuss with your doc to be sure

Normal oestrogen levels - well normal for when? They change daily during your cycle. It's probably they have tested her just after a period and her levels are too high. Many reasons for that - some of them are not great - early miscarriage etc. - but can also be caused by eating lots of soya FFS!

I assume she's had a negative pregnancy test?

luvaduck · 26/01/2009 17:11

you dont need to have bloods to go back on the pill.
unless she is going on it for acne or something so they were checking for polycystic ovaries?

Thanks, her period started two days after the test. She has her period actually now so dont think she is pregnant. She does not have acne.
