yes there is
it appears to be those who have very severe disease and therefore lots of chronic inflammation who are at risk most

why do you ask?

nailpolish · 26/01/2009 13:22

FIL has had non hodgkins for a while now - he has had numerous treatments for it and its not too bad just now
he has also just been diagnosed with RA and to me it makes sense that ther e is a link

am sorry to hear that.

its actually the other way round - people who have RA are more likely to get lymphoma - not heard of a link the other way round.
how old is he?

nailpolish · 26/01/2009 14:03

he is 65
wqs diagnosed with lymphoma about 3 yrs ago - past 6 months has had a lot of pain in his joints and is extrememly stiff - eg cannot get in and out of the passenger seat of a car without a lot of help

the dr has told him he cannot have any treatment for the RA and that is could be progressive - whats the likely outcome?

he also has other problems - this week he is going for an endoscopy to investigate his constant nausea and vomiting (well, not exactly constant but it comes and goes and has been doing so for a few months now) and he has lost half a stone.

also, wierdly, he has an infection in his belly button - it is sloughy and will not heal - has tried ab's to no effect

he is not very forthcoming with information and dh is getting worried his dad will be in a wheelchair and unable to cope

hmmm
who diagnosed RA - gp or specialist?

RA usually affects hands first and is much more common in women and usually comes on a bit younger - could still be RA (are you sure its not OA??) but sounds like rubbish that he can't have any treatment

sounds like he needs to see a specialist

nailpolish · 26/01/2009 15:26

he has been for lots of scans and it was someone at the hospital who tol dhim it was RA

he doesnt let dh or dhs brother go with him to the hospital so we have to rely on what he tells us the drs say

Hi my dad developed RA when in his 20's, he then went on to get Non Hodgkins Lymphoma about 10 years later. We were told the medication to treat the RA may have caused it.

I remember vomiting was a symptom of the lymphoma, unfortunately he was diagnosed too late and didn't survive as useless GP kept putting all symptoms down to RA instead of sending him for tests

But this was 20 years ago now ( I was only a child ) and treatment has come on leaps and bounds since then.

My best wishes to you and your family

luvaduck · 26/01/2009 21:00

sorry to hear that batty

that's the normal way round - RA causing lymphoma rather than nailpolish's FIL who had NHL first, in that case no link is known

however there is now new evidence that has shown that it is the activity of the disease that casues the lymphoma NOT the meds

nailpolish · 27/01/2009 09:04

batty im so sorry to hear that

dh was saying to me last night he thinks his dad has had RA longer than he is admitting to

but he has never had any treatment for it

well that would make sense

however they usually have deformed hands from it - does he?

will try and find a pic

nailpolish · 27/01/2009 14:41

i dont think he has deformed hands

will need to look more closely
