ok so trying not to make epic post but i cant go o the combined pill as i get migraines. i was on pill before ds1 (2.6) no probs then after he was born i got acne and went on cerazette. my skin only cleared up when i got pg with ds2 (9 weeks). anyway i dont know what to do now. saw gp and have got pills of cerazette but we discussed coil and inplant as i didnt really want the hormones in case the pill set my skin off again. gp suggested the inplant which i dont know much about and nobody with it. the coil has always made me shudder and the thought of having it put in worries me (esp being 9 weeks post birth) my mum and a friend had one put in recently and they both got v heavy painful bleeding. with 2 young ds'd im not sure i could cope with that at the mo?

i really dont know what to do and the gp did give me info about them all but i just dont know what to do. scared of the unkown i guess.

what woul you do??

I like having a coil. You forget about it and no hormones! I can't have anything hormonal because of health stuff, but hooray for metal!

wheredowegofromhere · 26/01/2009 11:39

The first few days were uncomfortable and the couple of periods heavier but not more painful. I love the copper (non hormonal) coil, it really works for me.

rolandbrowning · 26/01/2009 11:42

I also like my coil. I had one put in after having ds, I think he was about 16 weeks, and I hardly noticed it going in! I had some bleeding but not heavy or painful, it lasted a couple of days. As BlaDeBla says, you can just forget about it and there are no hormones. It's great as far as I am concerned.

mad4mybaby · 26/01/2009 12:27

what are your periods like now? I was always irregular without the pill so what do you think would happen to me? I dont really want to go back to not knowing when id come on?

pill- thats already ruled out as you said
implant - i had this and it gave me a massive appetite and i put on about 3 stone. also you may get the side effets from the hormones
coil- you can have the mirena (hormone) oneand you periods will probably stop and you dont have tot hink about it all but you may get the side effects from the hormones
copper coil- you can have heavier periods and its a bit nippy having it put in but you can forget about it and there are no side effects from the hormones

i have a copper coil and i think its great. had a really heavy period after it was put in and it was like a nipping pain whilst it was being put in but since then just normal periods every 4 weeks

newlysprung · 26/01/2009 12:30

Could you consider a mirena coil? I've just had one fitted and they're supposed to cause fewer, lighter (if any) periods, because the hormones in them stop your womb lining from getting thick, so they work v differently from normal copper coil.

Fitting wasn't too bad.

The dosage of the hormones is much lower than with the pill, as it's v localised so it might be OK for you.

mad4mybaby · 26/01/2009 12:32

what hormone is in it? i cant remember which i cant have hence the not being on the combined pill?

newlysprung · 26/01/2009 12:35

it's levenorgestrel (which is a progestogen).

GYoIsReallyHavingABaby · 26/01/2009 12:40

Hello
I had a copper coil (no hormones) for same reasons as you, couldnt have hormone related stuff.

Fitting was hard but I've not had kids yet (baby due in 7wks!) but was great once in. I didnt have a massive issue with heavy bleeding that others have mentioned.

Will be having one put back as soon as I can after birth.

Good luck

GYoIsReallyHavingABaby · 26/01/2009 12:42

benefit of non hormone coil is that there is no delay in regaining fertility after its removed if you wish to get preg again.

Mine came out on CD 8 and I was pregnant by CD 20! Oh, and removal is easy, no worse than smear test!

Was thrilled since after taking hormones in past I had 2plus years wait to get a period/cycle etc.

mad4mybaby · 26/01/2009 12:47

will def NOT be having anymore children. another reason his was suggested as dont have to worry about missed pills and tummy upsets. i just googled it and it talks about the doc showing you how to check for the strings. eh?? also does it make sex any diff?also says they have to give your womb an exam to make sure its the right shape!? i have a tilted womb, is this going to b a prob?

I had implant, just had it removed a few weeks ago to try for second baby:

pros:
It can stop your periods, so if you are experiencing heavy ones this is an advantage. it does not always do this, can make them irratic too but for me, I had two in 18 months.
it is oretty much 100% safe in terms of getting pg - I have done research and read in one article (i will try to find it) that there has not yet been one recorded case of a woman with a correctly fitted implant getting pg.
It lasts for 3 years, so you do not have to think about it any further until when it needs to be replaced.
Your normal hormone levels will return within a week, so if you want to try for another baby, you wont have to wait long after removal before you can start trying (unlike for example the pill/injection etc, do not know about coil).

Cons:
You need to have it inserted under the skin, can feel a bit 'cyber' like! It is put in under local aneasthetic, using a needle, but is a really simple process, quick and painless.
It will leave a tiny scar on insertion.
It will leave a slightly bigger scar when you have it removed.
It my take a bt of time to remove under general anaesthetic as it can be tricky to locate exactly.
Your periods may get heavier, but unlikely
You need to remember that it needs replacing after 3 years, they do not remind you
You might put on a bit of weight. I put on a small amount, not too noticeable. Some people do, some don't.

nailpolish · 26/01/2009 12:59

i fyou def dont want any more children persuade your dh to have a vasectomy

nailpolish · 26/01/2009 13:01

you have to have it removed under general anaesthetic?

thats one hell of a risk

mad4mybaby · 26/01/2009 13:01

the more research i do on the coil the more im put off it, i dont want to be poked about down there. ive had 2 smearsdone and last one was just over a year ago before i got pg with ds2 and it was agony. gp sent me for internal scan to make sureeverything was ok inside! Is the implant hormonal i take it? is it likely to make my skin bad again?

OP posts:
pavlovthecat · 26/01/2009 13:03

Oh, and another con - sorry - if it is fitted incorrectly, you can fall pg. And this has happened, but I guess its the same as with all contraception, there are risks involved in terms of correct fitting/usage.

not general anaesthetic I meant local they use lignocaine (sp).

mad4mybaby · 26/01/2009 13:03

oh and dh will be having the snip but it 3 month wait list plus another 16 weeks after its done before they have a sperm count to be sure its worked plus i really dont want anymore kids. ill prob be sterilised in few years when the boys are bigger

OP posts:
nailpolish · 26/01/2009 13:03

oh right - phew!

nailpolish · 26/01/2009 13:04

that was to pavlov

mad4mybaby · 26/01/2009 13:05

oh and another thing, i cant stand using condoms. they feel horrible no matter what type we try plus pausing to put it on really puts me off sex at that moment
