ice wrapped in a tea towel adn hold it there

poor you

traceybath · 25/01/2009 18:47

put a damp cloth and then cling film around it - its the air that makes a burn sting

plantsitter · 25/01/2009 18:47

Back under the cold tap and a paracetomol

jeminthecity · 25/01/2009 18:48

Yep, echo keep it cold

bodiddly · 25/01/2009 18:48

oooh my sympathies, I did that on my new steam iron recently .. it hurt like hell!

naswm · 25/01/2009 18:49

ibuprofen better for burns

Keep it cool, whatever though

BlackEyedDogstar · 25/01/2009 18:49

spread some minty toothpaste on

It really works!

FrannyandZooey · 25/01/2009 18:49

you have to do cold water for about 20 mins
sit down put them in a bowl
if it is a large area you should think about a + e or walk in centre

naswm · 25/01/2009 18:51

Not so sure about the toothpaste - dont do it if the skin is broken...

Keep it cool

squeaver · 25/01/2009 18:53

Sit with fingers in a bowl

lou33 · 25/01/2009 18:53

sympathy

i stuck the top of my hand to a hot grill earlier in the week, its about 2 inches long and hurts like a bitch still

NancysGarden · 25/01/2009 18:54

Keep under running cold water til heat is gone. After keep cold compress on. Take some pain relief, rest and it will go in a few hours.

If it's blistering btw, you prob need to seek medical advice.

traceybath · 25/01/2009 18:54

seriously was at hospital 6 weeks ago with my DS2 who'd got a nasty burn on his hand from boiling hot jam - don't ask how!

but they told me the best thing to do is to keep in cold water as long as possible and then wrap in a damp cloth and cling film for as long as possible.

if it gets worse/throbs do see a nurse as they've got a special dressing which they put on which should stop infection and help it heal.

Klaw · 25/01/2009 18:57

cold water until it's bearable. Do not stop until then... may take ages. got any lavender essential oil? that is VERY useful for burns you can even apply it neat

piratecat · 25/01/2009 19:00

your so kind, i had to re boot pc.

have i left it too long now to do cold water, i did it about 1/2 anhour ago, and admit i only put in water for oh about 20 seconds cos so painful.

naswm · 25/01/2009 19:02

no, its not too late, just keep it cool. I prefer ice wrapped in a tea towel myself instead of sticking it in cold water, but either will do. How big is the burnt area?

CoteDAzur · 25/01/2009 19:05

Ice! Keep your hand in ice, take it out only to make sure it doesn't sleep, then put it back in.

After several hours of this, the best cream for burn is the zinc & fish oil based baby bum creams. The ones that stink to high heaven.

piratecat · 25/01/2009 19:05

tops of first 3 fingers, sort of over knuckles. bloody mousehand too. i though i'd try microwavin rice, an put my hand in to lift the cling film.

doh!!

i have it in jug of water. will try ice. have to if am to get dd to bed!

I burnt tops of four fingers of my right hand with hot soup once. Kept it in ice, then realized I couldn't stand the pain in room temperature & headed for A&E.

Doctor there said that if I hadn't iced my fingers, my fingers would probably curl up, refusing to reopen and I would need an operation

piratecat · 25/01/2009 19:20

what did they do for you at a +e

OP posts:
CoteDAzur · 25/01/2009 19:24

Nothing. Gave me some painkillers and bandaged my hand with a burn cream. Doctor said I took care of the most important part by keeping it in ice.

Bandaged with gauze, though. NOT with plastic film, as was suggested lower down. Your skin needs to breathe.

naswm · 25/01/2009 19:40

how is it now piratecat?

I have some experience with burns - most recently a year ago when a candle blew up in my face. I had daily treatment amnd dressings changed at hospital for a good while afterwards, but they said I had been saved severe scarring because of the action taken immediately after the accident (I was drunk in shock but the friends who were with me made me keep my head in a bucket of iced water for AGES and then I went to bed with an iced towel on my face/neck before going to A&E 6 hours later).

Dont underestimate how bad burns are. Keep the ice thing going

iMum · 25/01/2009 19:41

wrap the burn/scald in clingfilm. it helps ease the pain.

piratecat · 26/01/2009 12:07

it's fine today thankyou everyone.

just tenderish and a bit tight.

thansk for reporting in. Look after the skin until it is comepltely healed, to prevent infection. Glad you it is better though.
