It started yesterday when he got up and got worse throughout the day, he says the pad/ball part of his big toe is extremely painful, he cannot walk on it at all.
His foot is very swollen also. He refuses to let me make him an appointment at the GP's as he doesn't want to miss any time at work. I suggested the out of hours doctors and he wont go to them either.

Anyone have any idea of what it could be, he can barely walk.

Sounds like Gout to me. It's extremely painful. He may need to ese the GP about it.

I'll have a google and see what I can find. Be warned, it can spread to knees etc. as well.

DustyTv · 24/01/2009 12:45

Thank you littlefish but What is gout?

Does this sound like it?

There are tabs across the top of the article to look at treatment etc.

mimsum · 24/01/2009 12:46

tell him to stop being silly and get to a dr - if it's infected and he leaves it it'll just get worse and he'll end up missing more time at work

Onlyaphase · 24/01/2009 12:47

Gout is uric acid crystals forming in the toes - very very painful. Used to be associated with old men in their clubs eating too well and drinking too much port and red wine......the one person I know with it now i.e present day does drink a lot of red wine though - does your DH?

Lemontart · 24/01/2009 12:50

I have had gout Was in my 20s at the time, not overweight (only size 12) and did not drink a lot of alcohol. I suspected other acidic things in my diet and poor circulation.

It produced a swollen big toe joint, went slightly shiny and purply red, very painful to walk on. It came on literally overnight and lasted a while. Anit inflammatories and painkillers were prescribed.

Gout is associated with Henry VIII and fat overweight blokes - that is not always the case!

madwomanintheattic · 24/01/2009 12:51

i was going to say gout too lol, it is one of those things that has a few odd social connotations lol...

DustyTv · 24/01/2009 12:53

Yes that does sound like it , it came on very suddenly and and the skin is shiny and red over is big toe area. He doesn't drink wine or a lot of alcohol TBH. He usually has a couple of beers a week if that.

He does however eat lots of meat and a lot of red meat.

I will book him an appointment at the GP's for next week, I will have to do it for as late as poss then he shouldn't miss too much work. TBH though if I can I will get him to the out of hours doctors this weekend.

Thank you.

if the whole foot is swollen it is probably infection it is prob infection and he needs antibiotics sharpish before the bone gets infected too. tell him to stop being stupid and see out of hours doc today

it could be gout or other things but he needs to have infection ruled out

DustyTv · 24/01/2009 12:56

lemontart, DH said it is extremely painful and I know he must be in pain as he very rarely moans about illness or pain. He does not get man flu lol.
It did come on literally overnight, he says he cannot remember banging his toe/foot. His toes is swollen but so is his foot, very much so actually and he struggled to get his shoes on this morning.

Sorry that should read toes are swollen not is swollen

If he didn?t bang it then it does sound like it could be gout - or an infection causing something like cellulitis. I was told to rest my foot and drink plenty of water, take painkillers.
I am a little concerned about him leaving it over the weekend. I left it for one day and was up in tears a lot of the night as it was just so sore. Definitely got worse without treatment. Is there really not a walk in clinic to go to over the weekend?
If you do choose to put up with it, make sure he rests it up, drinks plenty of water and keep a close eye on it. Any sign it is swelling up more or spreading up his foot please get emergency treatment. There is an outside chance it is an infection causing something like cellulitis and this must be treated very promptly with antibiotics.

As for going to work - I hope he is sitting down in an office and not on his feet at all, poor guy. I found even wearing shoes hard work after a day of gout going untreated

Hope he gets it sorted out soon x

DustyTv · 24/01/2009 13:34

He categorically will not see someone today , but has said if it is still the same tomorrow then he will go to the out of hours doctors.

I will keep working on him in the meantime.

When at work he can sit down but TBH is up and about all day helping students to their work so doesn't get much rest. He also walks to and from work as we no longer have a car, so I think he is going to have to either get a lift or get a taxi for a while until it is sorted.

How is he today Dusty? Any better? Did you get him to see the GP?

Lemontart · 26/01/2009 19:25

just checking in to see how he is?
Hope everything is ok and he is feeling better x

DustyTv · 28/01/2009 11:59

Ha ha no I didn't manage to get him to see the GP, he just works through it.

His foot is however a lot better thank you, The swelling has gone and he can walk again. I went to put his trainers in the wash and noticed a split in the sole of the left shoe. It is right near the ball of his big toe, so I am thinking that maybe that had something to do with it.

I am keeping my eye on him lol.
