Pneumonia

Hello
I was diagonised with pneumonia 3 weeks ago. I had flu ten days prior to this and the doctor thought I may have well been run down and consequently more susceptible to pneumonia. I am finishing antibiotics today and whilst I don't have trouble breathing now I just feel exhausted and run down. Has anyone had pneumonia and if so how long did it take them to get over it? TIA

My friend was told it could be up to three months. She was pretty much ok after six weeks but it now fine after three months.

I had pneumonia which was undiagnosed for a month. I ended up moving to the UK from Australia only 2 weeks after my recovery (luckily it was revoltingly hot here so it helped a lot I think) but I was still exhausted for about a month or two after. It has been 2.5 years and I now have asthma and I get chest infections regularly during winter. I also cough non stop all winter. I am on ventolin and atrovent inhalers daily.

Try Co-enzyme Q10; Co-enzyme Q10.I had pleurisy three times in one year followed by pneumonia. This helped me to recover, though I should follow my own advice as I constantly have colds and sinus infections.

Thanks so much for your replies, am going to order some co-enzyme!

hi rosbif what were your symptoms?
and how did you find out ?

smudgethepuppydog · 22/01/2009 18:27

Pnuemonia knocks you flat. DS has had it a few times and it is one of the only things that really lays him out long after the AB's have done their work.

Hi, I developed pneumonia after a really nasty bout of flu a few years back. I remember that it took 2 lots of ab's to get rid of it and the cough was awful. I pulled muscles all over my chest and back.

Having infections like pneumonia and flu REALLY knocks the stuffing out of you for weeks and sometimes months after you've 'recovered"

Hope you feel better soon

Feel for you rosbif, I ended up in hospital in December with pneumonia - you will feel like a wrung out dish rag for a while. However I went back to work after 4 weeks, and despite being more tired than normal (!!)I do feel myself now.

I was in denial for a while, I thought I would have to walk around in a snowdrift dresssed in rags to get pnuemonia, like you a week of flu and telling myself I would start to feel better soon! The worst for me was the terrible taste in my mouth from the medicine and just to top it of the thrush I got a week after I finished them!

Sympathies rosbif

My mum was told yesterday that she has pneumonia

First of all gall stones was suggested until she pointed out that she had her gall bladderr removed two years ago

Three months to get over it sounds like ages

My mum is in a lot of pain - when she breathes I think - she is questioning the diagnoses but we cant think what else it could be

I hope you feel better soon

Hi rosbif. I had pneumonia about three years ago. It's really bad isn't it. It took me over a year to start to feel properly better. I'd let it get really bad before I was admitted to hospital though as I kept thinking it would get better and dh was away at the time.

Take it easy. Eat well and take your time. You will be depleted. Also it's a very good idea to take some probiotics to replace the friendly flora which will be killed off by the anti biotics. A good health food shop will advise you on this. The benefits are well documented so it's not just hippy clap trap. Honest.

Get acidophilus bifidus. A good brand.

Yurtgirl, I really hope your poor mum gets better soon. Has she had a chest xray?

Thanks everyone. I thought I had flu (40 degree fever, horrid phlegm, fainting, low blood pressure) again (having had it 10 days earlier). I went to the doctor and he agreed and thought I had a chest infection too. He gave me ab's but 4 days later I was no better and was having problems breathing. As it was New Year's Day I went to A&E where they x-rayed my chest. It was then that they spotted it was pneumonia and changed all my medication as the original ab's didn't work against pneumonia. I've just finished three weeks of ab's and feel shattered. DH (who is lovely I should add) seems a bit mystified as to why I am so exhausted (have 3 DC's) and is going away with work all next week. Am quite worried how I am going to manage, we have no-one who can help nearby. I think I am quiet a stressed person and am sure this has made me more rundown and hence more susceptible to illness.
