I have got a ring on my back, it is itchy and there are raised bumbs which form a red circle...

I have never had anything like this before. Can it be passed on? I have got an 18month old dd who sleeps with me and is very close to me all the time so m worried I might pass it on.

Also how could I of got this in the first place???

Sounds very like ringworm and yes it is catching.

You need to get some antifungal cream and it'll quickly clear up.

smudgethepuppydog · 21/01/2009 18:36

Canestan from the chemists will get rid of it.

RiojaLover75 · 21/01/2009 18:41

Cover up the affected area until you can get to Dr's/ chemist. Wash bedding on a hot wash. It will go away but it needs treating.

Petrovia · 21/01/2009 18:45

I think Daktarin is better.

It's transmissible by contact, through bedding etc and towels.

If you make sure it is covered even in bed, you might get away with it.

Not sure how you could have caught it though.

Don't panic - it's a slow thing, it isn't going to eat you, you'll be ok

cantpickyourfamily · 21/01/2009 19:00

smudge - do you mean normal canestan for thrush? if so i've got some so will put it on now as cannot get a docs app till fri...

its on my back so easy to cover, so do you think dd will be ok if she doesn't touch it and def would not let her use my towel...

Yes bung on some canesten if you've got some, anything anti fungal should be helpful.

I think it'll be Ok - but ask the GP for advice as I can't remember (an ex and his whole family had it years ago!)

cantpickyourfamily · 21/01/2009 19:03

petrovia - its not nice but i'm not too worried about me, more worried about dd catching it...

you say its a slow thing so i couldn't of just caught it last night then? do you think it has prob been in my system for ages?

OP posts:
Petrovia · 21/01/2009 19:08

No it isn't a system type thing, you'd have had contact within the last few weeks probably - it isn't that easy to catch really. I meant i think dd will be ok. Just be cautious with it.

I think I narrowly escaped getting it myself, it starts off as a red patch and I noticed one and quickly zapped it with daktarin for a few days and it gradually went away.

It grows slowly and goes slowly iyswim.

cantpickyourfamily · 21/01/2009 19:16

petrovia - well i have only got one patch so will stick cream on while waiting to go to the docs...

that is weird as no one ever touches my back so really cannot work out how i got it.

ddo you know how you got it?

Petrovia · 21/01/2009 19:19

Erm, that would be through close physical contact with the ex

Have you stayed in a hotel recently or anything? Had overnight guests in your house?

smudgethepuppydog · 21/01/2009 19:28

Yup just normal canestan. I had it recently on my face but caught it very early, the chemist gave me canestan for it. Keep using it for a few days after you think it's gone else it comes back.

smudgethepuppydog · 21/01/2009 19:30

Have you got pets or been in contact with animals? Years ago DD got ringworm from the Jack Russel next door.

thehappyprince · 21/01/2009 20:39

ds got ringworm - I think from the cat, but he didn't seem bothered by it and it cleared up in a week or so with canesten which you don't need a prescription for. And he didn't pass it on to me..

cantpickyourfamily · 21/01/2009 20:47

i went on holiday but came back 1st jan, maybe it was from that, i have not really been too close to any animals. And have not had any close contact with nasty ex from start of dec...

Ring worm is a fungal infection, not a worm, in case you were worried

I had it during my second pregnancy, quite badly but no-one else got it from me.

If it is just one ring, it might be worth checking it is not Lyme Disease which can be caused by a tick.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 21/01/2009 21:04

ring worm

lyme disease

cantpickyourfamily · 21/01/2009 21:10

def not lyme disease, it looks like ring worm but much more faint....

Has the canestan helped?

Pwsimerimew · 23/01/2009 18:30

I love mums net!! I think I might have ringworm too (self diagnosed via NHS direct ) but will try canesten tonight, and if it doesnt disappear, i'll visit GP end of next week. Great help, thanks all.

Flibbertyjibbet · 23/01/2009 18:43

ds2 had ringworm.
HVs were telling me it was a sweat rash in the nappy area for months..

By the time it had spread to the backs of knees, elbow creases, up his back and all over his bottom i went to the gp and it was ringworm.

Took ages to clear up, you have to put the cream on for ages before it really takes effect.

Go and see your gp to confirm diagnosis. We were given Clotrimazole cream for ds2.

littlelamb · 23/01/2009 18:46

Do not scratch it
I have a horrible scar on the back of my knee where I had ringworm as a child and kept scratching it

cantpickyourfamily · 23/01/2009 19:29

it was very faint and i used the canestan, then went to the docs today and he could hardly even see it, it took him a few mins to see it.

I also showed my mum who it took a while to see it too... so i think it helped, but have now got another cream so will use that...
